Jacob Trouba: Do the Sabres Have any Business Kicking the Tires?

Jacob Trouba - Kevin Hoffman-USA TODAY Sports

We all know exactly how the Sabres defensive drama has played out over the past year, with the "imbalance" of handedness supposedly now fixed by adding Dmitry Kulikov.

However, after the statement made by Jacob Trouba's agent, should the Sabres toss their name into the ring for the RHD? According to Winnipeg's GM Kevin Cheveldayoff, he's not looking for draft picks and he wants a LHD who would fill the void that Trouba was supposed to fill (although he's right handed).

Let's take a quick stock of what the Sabres would have to offer Winnipeg if Sabres GM Tim Murray hopped on the line with Cheveldayoff:

- Rasmus Ristolainen: Risto is a touch younger than Trouba, and I think that for GMTM to do a one-for-one with Trouba this way doesn't seem like his style. Unless there's contract negotiation issues we don't know about, I'm sticking with Bob McKenzie and saying the Sabres don't jump at this trade.

- Jake McCabe / Dmitry Kulikov: Both of these players fall under Cheveldayoff's specific requirement of being a LHD, but I think if you're arguing for a one-for-one type deal, neither of these guys are up to snuff to be a piece that brings back Trouba. With that, what would they want in return? I'd expect names like Hudson Fasching, Johan Larsson, Zemgus Girgensons, and Tyler Ennis would be all involved. Yes, we just traded for Kulikov to balance the D out. But would you complain if GMTM took Mark Pysyk and turned him into Trouba? Doubtful.

- Zach Bogosian / Cody Franson / Josh Gorges: Not to be unfair to these guys, but I doubt that Winnipeg has any interest in reacquiring Bogo or acquiring the latter two. Just an unrealistic thought to have.

- Brendan Guhle: While Cheveldayoff has again said he doesn't want prospects in return, you have to think that if the Sabres were in discussions, that at some point Guhle's name would be mentioned. That said, I doubt it would go anywhere, as he'd probably rather poach McCabe. With the expansion draft looming, if you use Guhle as your defensive plug, you now have way too many defensemen and not enough protection slots, so cross this off the list.

At the end of the day, while I'd be happy to bring Trouba on, and I don't think that trading McCabe/Kulikov would be a huge windfall if you get him, I don't think what we have to offer is going to hold up on Winnipeg's side of the deal. Our best package probably involves McCabe and Ennis/Zem with a pick, and I just don't see that being the best deal that Winnipeg could choose from (assuming Risto is off the table).

What do you think the price tag of Trouba is, and what would you be willing to part with to get him?
