You’ve all heard "The Twelve Days of Christmas", an English Christmas carol that’s been around for a couple of centuries now. Here’s a jazz band, second line version of the song -
7. A blockbuster trade to shake things up, before or on trade deadline day
Make no mistake, I like the jump that William Carrier brings to the top line, but in all honesty he’s more of a change-up than a regular. General Manager Tim Murray traded away a third round draft pick in an attempt to convince Jimmy Vesey to sign here in the offseason, but that didn’t happen. And that vacancy on the left wing in the top six is yet to be filled, though Marcus Foligno will get an audition there tonight.
While we likely can’t get an Alexander Ovechkin or a Jamie Benn (or can we? hmm..), the trade for Taylor Hall showed that finding an elite top line left wing is not impossible. Players like Johnny Gaudreau and Filip Forsberg are draft diamonds while Daniel Sedin and Zach Parise are past their prime. But how about a Gabriel Landeskog who is playing for an Avalanche franchise in crisis, or possibly an Alex Steen if the Blues are looking to make a change.
We’ve seen in the past that GMTM is not afraid to rock the boat, but is this the season to make that call? If the Sabres really start to sparkle in 2017, then trade deadline day on February 28th could be a very memorable one indeed.
Who would you like to swing a trade for to fill the LW spot in the top six?
