Over the past few years, Terry and Kim Pegula have turned downtown Buffalo into a premiere hockey destination. The HarborCenter facility recently hosted the 2015 draft combine, Buffalo will host the 2016 NHL Draft, and the city recently hosted both the 2015 U-18 Women's World Championship and 2015 Sled Hockey World Championships.

And today, it was revealed that another crown jewel of the hockey world may be coming to Western New York - Buffalo is one of five finalists to host the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championships.

The World Juniors take place every year in late December and feature the best U-20 players from around the world. It's a really fun tournament to watch, and if they were selected to host, it would go a long way toward legitimizing Buffalo not only as a top hockey destination in North America, but as a city on the rise.

The six finalists will be whittled down even further over the next sixty days, while the final decision likely won't come until the end of the year. The other finalists are Chicago, Tampa Bay, Pittsburgh, and St. Louis.
