The Buffalo Sabres have been keeping games close recently, but haven't managed to seal the deal. Last night, that changed thanks to Brian Flynn's shootout winner and Michal Neuvirth's 36 saves.
Flynn's goal was a move he "works on a lot", he said after the game. His sweet dipsy-doodle past Ray Emery gave the Sabres their first win in five tries, and their third point out of their last four.
After a first period that ended tied 1-1, the second period began with a bang as Brian Gionta banged home a rebound off a Torrey Mitchell shot within the first minute to give the Sabres the lead. The goal gave Gionta his 500th career point, and Mitchell's assist earned him his 100th - congrats to both players. That lead wouldn't last long, however, as a rare Zemgus Girgensons penalty would cost the Sabres their lead, as Jake Voracek pounded a rebound home on the power play to tie the game at two.
The teams would play a scoreless third, and eventually went to the shootout were Flynn notched his game winner. Michal Neuvirth was strong in the net for Buffalo, making 36 saves, while the Sabres managed to put 32 shots on Emery.
The win was Neuvirth's first since November 15. He was relieved to get that monkey off his back after the game, saying, "Pretty happy I'm not going to hear any more questions about the losing streak. For me personally, it's big."
