Contract: RFA this offseason

Report Card Grade in 2012: 3.5 out of 10

Introduction: We’re really starting with a zinger here, folks. Luke Adam played a whopping four games for the Sabres this season, so this post will be largely about his Amerks season and his place in the grand scheme of the Sabres organization.

Adam has been a disappointment since firing out of the gate along with Thomas Vanek and Jason Pominville at the beginning of the 2011-12 season. Since then, he’s barely managed to crack the NHL roster, and has provided decent, if not great, production in Rochester. However, once Ron Rolston was promoted, along with Brian Flynn and Kevin Porter, Adam was given a shot to be the Amerks #1 center, and thrived. His future remains murky with the Sabres ever-growing stable of young centers, and with his contract up this season it will be interesting to see what the organization decides to do with Adam.

Key Stat: This is tough with Adam playing most of his season in the minors, so we’ll go with this number – zero. As in, zero years left on his rookie deal. Adam is a restricted free agent this summer, and it will be interesting to see what the team decides to do with him. Seeing as he’s a productive player in Rochester, and decent emergency call-up, I would expect Buffalo to try and re-sign Adam on the cheap, but if their disappointment in his progression is strong enough, they could simply let him go.

Thumbs Up: Adam responded positively to increased responsibility along with a slightly more player-friendly coaching style than he had with Lindy Ruff. Led the Sabres with a 50% shooting percentage (on two total shots). However, his 141 shots for the Amerks trailed only Mark Mancari in terms of quantity.

Thumbs Down: His -10 in Rochester doesn’t look very good, and is tied for second worst on the team. He only played four games for the Sabres, which is not where we expected this 2008 second round pick to be at this point in his career.

Voting: Using the good old grade school system of A, B, C, D, F, with a A representing a great season, C an average season, and F a very poor season, grade Luke Adam on his performance this year according to the expectations you had for him.

What grade would you give Luke Adam’s 2013 NHL season?
