Contract: $3 million this year, UFA this summer.

Report Card Grade in 2012: 7 out of 10

Introduction: Jordan Leopold entered this season as one of the Sabres better, more reliable defensemen. He ended the season on the St. Louis Blues, after struggling through an inconsistent 2013 campaign with Buffalo.

In just 24 games with the Sabres, Leopold’s game was as unreliable as most of his other teammates, earning himself a -7 with just four points in the first two months of the season. He was eventually traded to St. Louis for their second and fifth round picks this year, ending his short stint with the Buffalo Sabres.

Key Stat: Despite being one of ten Sabres players to earn more than two minutes of ice time per game on the power play, Leopold managed just two measly points with the man advantage. Leopold’s struggles were indicative of the team’s struggled as a whole.

His strength as a defenseman is in the offensive zone, though he’s certainly not a bad defender. Still, you expect a guy like Leopold to jump-start an offense (or a power play) with his smooth skating, crisp passing, and pretty strong shot. Two points in 24 games with Buffalo on the PP is just a big disappointment.

Thumbs Up: Leopold could always be relied upon to play in all situations, being one of only three Sabres players to average more than two minutes per game on both the power play and penalty kill. Ranked sixth on the team in blocked shots despite just playing 24 games in the blue and gold.

Thumbs Down: Ten points ranks as Leopold’s lowest output of the last five years, even when you take in to account the shortened season. He had an exceptionally poor offensive year, tying the lowest goal total of his career with just two, which he last did in the 2006-07 season. Had almost twice as many giveaways as takeaways.

Voting: Using the good old grade school system of A, B, C, D, F, with A representing a great season, C an average season, and F a very poor season, grade Jordan Leopold on his performance this year according to the expectations you had for him.

What grade would you give Jordan Leopold for his 2012-13 season?
