Report Card in 2012: N/A

Introduction: Chad Ruwehdel had a whirlwind weekend in his first professional weekend. The 23 year old defenseman saw his college team that he played for, the UMass-Lowell Riverhawks, get eliminated from the NCAA Frozen Four by Yale on a Thursday. The kid then turned around and signed a free agent contract with the Sabres on that Saturday and played two games for the Sabres.

Overall, Ruhwedel ended up playing a total of seven games in the 2013 season, registering no points but some praises for such a young competitor. The kid averaged 14 minutes/game in his seven games and had a career high three shots on goal in his second game against the Tampa Bay Lightning. For Lowell, Ruhwedel managed a career high seven goals in 41 games and 23 points.

With a full development camp and training camp coming this offseason, it will be interesting to see where Ruhwedel will slot in the lineup after starting right away with the NHL club.

Thumbs Up/Down: I’m taking the easy way out on this part because Ruhwedel had such a small sample size in the NHL. The kid played well to keep himself on the parent club after the handful of injuries the team faced but with so many prospects vying for positions during development and training camp, is he good enough to make the club next season.

Voting: Using the good old grade system of A, B, C, D, F, with A representing a great season, C an average season, and F a very poor season, grade Chad Ruhwedel on his performance this season compared to the expectations you had for him.

How would you grade Chad Ruhwedel’s 2013 season?
