2013-14 Buffalo Sabres Report Cards: Mark Pysyk

Contract: Signed through 2014-2015 at $870,000.

Report Card Grade in 2013: N/A

Introduction: Sabres fans got a longer look at Mark Pysyk this year after showing some good signs in his 19 games last season. What they saw in 2013-14 was a continuation of his progression, as Pysyk developed into one of the team’s top defensemen. He spent some time down in Rochester this season for various reasons. While Pysyk had become a steady defensive presence, Nolan said that Pysyk needed to develop his offensive game further in the AHL. Some questioned why the Sabres would send down one of their best defenseman while playing Jamie McBain so frequently. The tank is alive and well in Buffalo.

Thumbs Up: Pysyk finished seventh on the team in Corsi percentage, fourth among players who were dressed for at least 15 games this season. He was ninth in Fenwick percentage and his average time on the ice increased from 15 minutes last season to 19 minutes this year. His fancy stats are all rather impressive when you consider that he has the third toughest quality of competition (behind Christian Ehrhoff and Tyler Myers), is 22 years old, and hasn’t played a full season in Buffalo yet.

Thumbs Down: The offensive game wasn’t there for Pysyk this season and as previously mentioned was part of the reason he was sent back to Rochester in the later portion of the season. In Buffalo his scoring percentage was a lowly 2%. His stat line increased slightly, a goal and 11 assists in 31 games, higher than his PPG average with Rochester the season before.

Memorable Moment: That goal that Pysyk scored this year? It wasn’t exactly the most impressive on Pysyk’s part, but it certainly was memorable. In fact, it was one of the most memorable moments of the entire Sabres season. Yes, I am talking about the Butt goal.

Voting: Voting: We’re grading on a curve this year, adjusting for the Sabres organizational ineptitude. So, using the good old grade school system of A, B, C, D, F, with A representing a great season (for the Sabres) C an average season, and F a very poor season (again, for the worst team in the league) grade Tyler Myers on his performance this year.

How would you grade Mark Pysyk on his 2013-14 season?

A 67
B 267
C 85
