The Best of Jeanneret: (2) Are You Ready Legion Of Doom? vs. (3) Roll The Highlight Film

New, comments

The Best of Rick Jeanneret is our summer quest to determine which of Jeanneret's most memorable calls ranks as the greatest of all time by ranking and voting on 16 of the best.

Are You Ready Legion Of Doom?

The Buffalo Sabres found themselves back in the 1997 playoffs after having missed the year before. Ranked as a #2 seed, the expectations were high, but the Sabres quickly found themselves in a first round hole against the Ottawa Senators. After winning in Game 6 to force the rubber match, the two teams forced overtime tied at 2.

It was in the first overtime period that Derek Plante knocked down a pass in the neutral zone, collected it himself, and ripped a slap shot past the Ottawa goalie to send the Sabres in to the second round to take on the Philadelphia Flyers, or as Rick Jeanneret dubbed them in one of his most memorable calls, the Legion of Doom.

Roll The Highlight Film

There are few goals that inspire a call so memorable that they named a CD after it, but Maxim Afinogenov's against the Tampa Bay Lightning was certainly one of them. A 360-spinorama-thorough-the-legs miracle move that somehow beat the defender and found its way into the back of the net. A gasp that said "I don't believe it" from Jim Lorentz preceded Jeanneret's famous call that has, over the years, ingrained itself into the popular Sabres consciousness.
