The Sabres new owner announced yesterday and will most likely be in attendance tonight, a team that needs this win to keep any semblance of playoff hopes alive, and a crowd that has a sense of revitalization. When you put all of these things together, its going to make for one crazy night at HSBC Arena. Here are some notes heading into the matchup tonight.
- Craig Rivet has been waived by the Buffalo Sabres according to TSN's Bob McKenzie. This doesn't necessarily mean that Rivet will be sent down to Portland, but it does open up a roster spot for a move that could be made in the near future. It also means that there should be a new captain for the team. The debate has gone on for a few months now on how should be the next captain, so it will be interesting to see what happens.
- Steve Montador will be playing in his 500th career game of the season. In his career, Montador has 27 goals and 79 assists in 499 games with five different teams.
- Saying this game is a must win isn't putting together the whole picture. Every game from here on out this season is a must win for the team as they try and claw their way back into the playoff picture. According to Sports Club Stats, the Sabres have a 34.7% chance of still making the playoffs and tonight's game could impact that further. If they win, the chances go up 5.9%, they lose and they decrease 8.9%.
- The Atlanta defense can find the back of the net as they have the second highest scoring defense behind the Pittsburgh Penguins. All of this is led by converted defenseman Dustin Byfuglien, who has 18 goals and 27 assists on the season. The Buffalo Sabres know first hand how dangerous that Byfuglien can be in scoring.
Game time is 7:00 pm and can be found on MSG.
