Olympic Hockey Day One: Miller to Lead USA Today and Everyday

New, comments

It's finally here...the Olympic hockey tournament starts this afternoon with a game between the United States and Switzerland (USA Network) at 3 p.m.. In preparation for the games USA head coach Ron Wilson announced yesterday that Ryan Miller is the starting goalie and he is expected to play every game of the tournament.

While Miller will help get the tournament started it will be Lindy Ruff behind the bench as an assistant coach for Canada in the evening contest at 7:30 p.m. (CNBC). Canada is the favorite to win the tournament but their game against Norway doesn't figure to be much of a test.

If you think these two games don't matter because USA and Canada are heavy favorites, you are wrong. Because of the tie-breaking rules it is imperative that both teams play an entire 60 minutes and do their best to increase their goal differential. Four teams will get a bye into the quarter-finals and it will probably come down to a tie-breaker at the end of the week.

Game Thread

I promised everyone a game thread and I will follow through on that promise. However, it has been brought to my attention that SB Nation.com is planning a game thread as well. If you want to keep the game thread in house we can do that or we can go on a field trip and enjoy the game with other USA fans at SB Nation.com. I will put up a poll and see what you want to do.
