Sabres Choke Two Points Away in the Third

The Sabres came out swinging in the first period with oft benched Max Afinogenov scoring 1:32 into the first period after a lucky bounce.  It wouldn't be enough as the Flyers score four unanswered goals in the third period to beat the Sabres 5-2.

Magical Marty Biron

Martin Biron has been really good against his former teammates this season.  He has allowed only four goals in three games this season including a 34 shot shutout in the beginning of the season.  The Flyers have seemed to have the Sabres number this season, beating them all three times by a combined score of 14-5 and Biron has been a major part of this.  The Flyers defense and backchecking also have helped the situation.  The Sabres looked completely lost in their own zone being picked off and outshot by the Flyers 32-29.

Is This the End of the Season

The Sabres have lost their last two games and five of their last seven.  They are quickly slipping out of the playoff race as the teams around the Sabres are continuing to get points.  Most critics thought that the loss of Ryan Miller was going to be the end of the Sabres playoff run but Patrick Lalime has played fairly well in the cleanup role.  The offense in front of him though has completely laid an egg.  The Sabres have scored three goals or more only three times in the last seven games.  Even with the return of Thomas Vanek back to the lineup, the Sabres cannot seem to find a scoring groove to be able to close out games.  Max Afinogenov scored his first goal since returning to the lineup and Vanek only has one goal since returning as well.

The offensive players that played extremely well in the past few seasons have not found anything going all season.  Pominville and Hecht are two players that have hit massive cold streaks since signing large extensions.  MacArthur and Paille have hit growing pains and gone frigid themselves.

Sabres Need to Shake Things Up

Lindy Ruff needs to shake something up heading into a crucial matchup against the Panthers.  Benching major players that can't seem to find the net or giving Lalime a rest after giving four goals in his seventh consecutive game, this team needs a change and quickly.  They will be at least three points down with only fifteen games left and not having any games in hand on anyone ahead of them.  The season is falling apart and quickly.

Thanks to everyone who suffered through that third period.  Next up for the Sabres is a showdown with the Florida Panthers who sit, as of now, in seventh place in the conference.
