Sabres Month in Review: November

There are now two months in the books and the Buffalo Sabres are still near the top of the Northeast Division. October was a banner month for the Sabres and would be impossible for the team to duplicate. November was a month of highs and lows for the Sabres. They suffered a season worst four game losing streak but also had two three game winning streaks, including their current three game winning streak.

Goal Scoring

5-on-5 5-on-4 5-on-3 4-on-4 4-on-3 3-on-3 3-on-4 3-on-5 4-on-5 EN PS
Goals For 17 12 0 1 1 0 0 0 0 1 0
Goals Against 20 1 0 3 0 0 0 1 4 2 0

The power play production has increased considerably but it comes at the same time of a horrible even strength drought. The Sabres are a minus-3 while 5-on-5 and also minus-2 when they are 4-on-4. If the team is going to relive their October success they will have to start playing better at even strength. The Goalie play can only carry the team so far before they need to help offensively.

Home Away
 Games 7 6
 Goals For 17 15
 Goals Against 16 15
 PP Goals 9 4
 PP Goals Against 2 3
 SH Goals 0 0
 SH Goals Against 0 1

The only stat that jumps off the page is the power play goals they score at home. The more glaring stat is how bad the Sabres are at home while playing even strength. They are a minus-6 at even strength on home ice in their five home games during November. That is a trend that will have to change, especially since the next five games are at home.

The Good

Ryan Miller continues to be the most important part of this team. The team couldn't duplicate their play from the month of October by Ryan Miller was probably better. Miller allowed five goals in a loss to Florida and allowed only 15 goals in the other 10 games he played. We thought we knew Ryan Miller but nobody could have predicted just how good he really is. It's time to start talking about him in the same conversation as guys like Martin Broduer and Robert Luongo. Why can't Miller be considered the best in the NHL?

Derek Roy rebounded from a slow start to the season by scoring five goals to lead the team in November. Roy also tied with Connolly to lead the team in points with 11 in the month. Tyler Myers continued to contribute offensively for the Sabres and had a goal and seven assists in 13 games.

The Disappointments

Thomas Vanek scored four goals in the month and had six assists as well but he is well off his pace from last season. The Sabres expect Vanek to be a go-to guy and he has been anything but that so far. Vanek has had his chances recently but he has been unable to finish.

Clarke MacArthur started the season as an offensive juggernaut but he has cooled considerably in the month of November. I hyped up the MacArthur signing in the off-season and I was quick to gloat when he started hot...now I have to be honest when he is not playing well. C-Mac scored only two goals in November and both were on the power play. His even strength play has been bad and has earned him a team worst minus-8 rating in the November.

The backup goaltending has been bad as well. This has been a hot button topic here on DBTB and rightfully so. The Sabres backups played only two games in November and allowed a combined nine goals in two losses. Jhonas Enroth made his NHL debut while Lalime was injured and Lalime struggled in his only start after returning to the lineup.

Player of the Month

For the second consecutive month the winner is Ryan Miller. How could anyone else even be considered.
