Sabres Head to Break on Sour Note

The Buffalo Sabres had hoped to head to the All-Star break with a four game winning streak but a slow start did the Sabres in.  The Lightning took advanatge of an early power play to go ahead 1-0.  They built upon that lead on a Steve Downie goal just 34 seconds later and took a 2-0 lead into the locker room after one period.

The Sabres came out with a purpose in the second period and cut the lead in half just 19 seconds into the second period.  They outplayed and outshot the Lightning throughout the second period but the Lightning answered everything the Sabres threw at them.  The Sabres scored three second period goals but the Lightning answered every one of them and led 5-3 after two periods.

It's usually the third period when the Sabres let up but tonight was the first period where they were flat.  Either way it equals a loss and a team that refuses to play an entire 60 minutes.  Even in their three game winning streak there were times that they didn't look good.  Miller has been the difference for this team recently but tonight he had no chance  When presented an opportunity to make saves he did just that.  His best save of the game was stopping two shots from Vinny Lecavalier while he was on a breakaway.

This game tonight was a perfect example of how making simple mistakes can cost you a game.  The Sabres proved they are a better team than the Lightning but the Lightning managed a two goal victory.  A couple of giveaways, a couple of bad bounces and the inability to clear the front of the net were the Sabres downfall tonight.

Game Notes

  • Derek Roy continues to show that he is the Sabres best player, scoring two goals again tonight and only the goal post stopped him from having a hat trick.
  • The Sabres may be without another Defenseman after an apparent shoulder injury to Henrik Tallinder.  The perfect example of adding insult to injury...Tallinder took a tripping penalty and injured his shoulder in the process.
  • The Sabres and Lightning will not meet again this season and they split the season series 2-2.
  • Despite allowing five goals, Ryan Miller was solid in goal again for the Sabres.  He gave the team a chance to win although they couldn't get any offense in the third period.
  • The Sabres were 2-for-5 with the man advantage with goals by Derek Roy and Ales Kotalik.
  • The Sabres normally solid penalty kill allowed two power play goals in just four opportunities.  One of the goals came on a 5-on-3 advantage.

Harry Neale Quote of the Game

It wasn't much of quote night for Harry but he said one thing that rang true to me.

RJ Says "Tonight will be the last action in the NHL until after the All-Star break"

Harry responds "Yeah, don't confuse the All-Star game with action"
