Game 1 open thread: Sabres vs. Islanders

New, comments

It's finally time to get the season started.  It may not have been the longest off season in franchise history but it sure felt like it.  I anticipate a good game and hope for some participation here.

Sabres Notes:

Tonight will be the Sabres first regular season game since the departure of last seasons captains Chris Drury and Danny Briere...Derek Roy led the NHl in pre-season points scoring six goals and six assists in the final three pre-season games...Jochen Hecht will be the captain tonight and for all of October.  The players decided to rotate the captaincy every month during the season...Teppo Numminen is out of the hospital after successful heart surgery, he had an opportunity to visit his teammates this week...There will be a party in the plaza before tonights game and the Presidents Trophy will be on display for the fans to see...The Sabres will raise two banners before tonights game, one for the Presidents Trophy and one for the division championship.

NY Islanders Notes:

The NY Islanders had a major overhaul in the off season bringing in six new players (Mike Comrie, Bill Guerin, Ruslan Fedetenko, Jon Sim, Andy Sutton and Josef Vasicek)...Bill Guerin was named the Islanders captain shortly after signing with the club...The Islanders will use three newcomers on their top line- Guerin-Comrie-Fedetenko...The top line had 14 points in three pre-season games...Ruslan Fedetenko is one assist away from 100 in his NHL career.

Fast Fact:

The Sabres have won 20 of their 36 season openers.
