Buffalo Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff announced today that the team will use a rotating captaincy this season. He also announced that Jochen Hecht will be the captain for the month of October. Everyone already knows that I have been highly critical of the idea of using the rotating captaincy...well I've a little bit of a change of heart. The reason I changed my mind is that the players themselves decided to use a rotating captaincy and they also chose Jochen Hecht as the captain for October.
The Sabres used a roting captain during the 2003-2004 season and it didn't work out all that well. Let's hope that is not the case this season but let's be honest...this is a much better team than the 03-04 team. The captains during the 03-04 season were Miro Satan, Chris Drury (twice), James Patrick, J.P. Dumont and Danny Briere. It became obvious by the end of the season that Chris Drury was a true leader and a good captain.
It will be interesting to see who is the next captain, or will they stay with Hecht. A few people who might be canidates are Derek Roy, Brian Campbell, Thomas Vanek, Paul Gaustad, Henrik Tallinder and Toni Lydman. I still stand by original statement that Brian Campbell should be the Sabres captain but I'm not overly upset at the direction they went. As stated before because of the players involvement it shouldn't have a negative effect on the team.
