FanPost: Sabres Puzzle Corner, Summer 2023 Edition

Photo: Melissa Burgess

In the quiet time of the NHL offseason earlier this summer, I needed a diversion, and hoped maybe you all needed one too.  So I present an original puzzle of logical deduction I composed and submitted as a FanPost.  My first submission somehow got lost, so with hockey right around the corner you may no longer need a diversion yourself, but here it is anyway.

I think it’s pretty self-explanatory, but if you have questions leave them in the comments (using spoiler text if your question might give something away), which I will check periodically.  If requested, I will post a solution (and the logical steps to arrive at it) after 4 or 5 days.  Once you think you have solved it, feel free to post your answer in the comments, but again please use spoiler text if you do (spoiler text is one of the options in the comment box).

Enjoy!

One day last season before practice the Sabres’ junior equipment manager (let’s call him Ralph) called five players into his office, to tell them that he had noticed their jerseys had been getting a little frayed so he had decided to fix them.  He gave each player a wrapped package and said “here, go try them on and see how you like the repairs.”

The five players (and their respective jersey numbers) were:

Kyle Okposo –  #21
Victor Olofsson – #71
Jeff Skinner – #53
Tage Thompson – #72
Alex Tuch – #89

The five players left Ralph’s office and walked to the locker room and started opening the packages Ralph had given them.  “Hey,” Tuch said. “This isn’t my jersey, I’ve got –“

“Hold on!” interrupted Okposo.  “I don’t have my own jersey either.  How about the rest of you?  Don’t say whose you have — I see an opportunity here for a team-building exercise.”

The other players confirmed that each of them had been given the jersey of one of the other four, but none had their own.  “That junior equipment manager Ralph is a long-time Sabres fan,” Thompson said.  “He probably drinks a lot.”

Okposo continued explaining.  “Let’s start telling one another some detail about the jersey we were given.  Then we’ll see if we can figure out who has who.”

“Great idea!” said Skinner.  “I’ll go first.  Ox, I’m going to tell you one of the digits in the number on the jersey I have.”  He leans over and whispers something to Okposo that the other players can’t hear.

“Hmm,” Okposo said to all of them.  “I still don’t know whose jersey Skinner has.”  Okposo then said to Skinner, “OK Skins, I’m going to tell you the first letter of the name on the back of the jersey I’m holding,” and whispered this letter to Skinner (author’s note: this would of course be the first letter of the last name of the player whose jersey Okposo held).

“Sorry,” Skinner replied, again so everyone could hear.  “I still don’t know which one you have either.”

“Ooh!” Tuch said.  “Then I now know whose jersey Okposo has!”

“Hey,” Olofsson chimed in.  “Now I know who Skinner has too!”

Okposo, ever the captain, finished up with, “And now we all know which jersey each of us received.  When this team works together, there’s nothing we can’t accomplish!”

The five teammates then exchanged jerseys and high-fives, and went on to have an excellent practice.

Now, can you match wits with the team and determine which jersey each player got from Ralph?
