According to various sources the Sabres have added a second former Canadien in Brian Gionta, who has signed a three-year $12.75 million deal with Buffalo. The Sabres have also signed Cody McCormick to a three year deal worth $4.5 million, acquiring a player that they traded to Minnesota only a few months ago.
Gionta, a Rochester native, has been linked to Buffalo as of late to serve as a mentor to the young roster. A 12-year veteran and Montreal's former captain, Gionta has spent the last five seasons with the Canadiens. Last year he scored 18 goals and 22 assists in 81 games. Despite being a Sabre for less than an hour, he's likely a front-runner for the captaincy next season.
With the additions of Gionta and Gorges today Murray cut the space between the Sabres and the cap floor nearly in half, adding $8 million dollars to the payroll.
McCormick played four seasons in Buffalo before being sent to Minnesota with Matt Moulson this season. In 272 games in Buffalo he scored 20 goals and 41 assists.
