Draft day is coming fast. Faster than we pack Ville's bags this past week. There are several scenarios that could easily play out in front of us. Some of them are not the best for us. Not really bad for us, but not the best options.
Florida drafts Aaron Ekblad
Buffalo gets their choice of the remaining offensive studs.
Florida trades the pick to Edmonton and they take Ekblad
Buffalo still gets their choice of Sams or Draisaitl
Option 3 is where it gets interesting.
Florida or any other team, other than Edmonton, drafts first and does not take Ekblad first overall.
Buffalo now has an incredible opportunity to grab a few assets from Edmonton and take a half step back to number 3 and give the Oilers Ekblad while taking an offensive guy that we need anyway.
Why would Edmonton be willing to jump on Ekblad? Maybe because 2 of the last three high defense men they drafted have not progressed as expected and they are still in need of a difference maker on the back end.
Who could they move to get this job done. Lets take a look at their asset pool.
They have a 1st and a 4th round pick this year. No 2nd or 3rd, so they could be interested in one of our 2nd round picks to pad a trade for an established player or developing drafted player.
Mitchell Moroz is a power forward similar in design to our beloved Grigenson. He may be just an energy guy, but he could be something more if he develops.
Marco Roy is a hard working kid, who has offensive talent. While he is small he still has lots of time to work on his strength.
Or will they finally let go of one of their real assets in Gagner or Yakupov? Both have great potential, but Yakupov is a bit of a strong willed, my way or the Hwy kind of player.
Their strongest asset definitely has to be that first round pick in 2015. Would they be willing to move it if we threw in another player as well as the pick? Maybe.
Any way you address the situation the third option definitely is interesting and could work out to be the best for Buffalo.
Buffalo trades 2nd over all and the 31 pick plus Torrey Mitchell
Edmonton for 3rd overall and 2105 first round pick. or Sam Gagner.
Does anyone see any better scenarios? If you do lets have them.
