2013-14 Buffalo Sabres Report Cards: John Scott

Kevin Hoffman-USA TODAY Sports

The Buffalo Sabres 2013-14 season was one of the worst in franchise history, and now it's time to take a look at who made it all possible. We're grading everybody who played at least 20(ish) games for the Sabres this year, from Conacher to Weber.

Contract: UFA (Made $750,000 this season)

Report Card Grade in 2013: B (link here)

Introduction: When John Scott was brought onto the Sabres we all assumed we were getting some much needed grit.  That was the case but I also don't think we were prepared to play an enforcer for 56 games a season, the most in his NHL career.

In addition to his role as a forward he spent some time in the defensive end this season with less than stellar results as he bounced back and forth between the positions where he was needed. He quickly earned goon status, especially after a Mike Milbury rant.

Key Stat: 1 Goal. Honestly, John Scott had a goal and it was awesome. Keep reading if you want to see it yet again (which you should). John Scott is like that kid on your high school soccer team that was always a super nice guy but wasn't very good at sports and, if that kid happened to score, the team went crazy. It was hard to find much else. He was -12 which is fairly decent for this team I guess but he also only managed an average of 6:45 of ice time per game. He had 125 penalty minutes which led the team and was 13th overall in the NHL.

Thumbs Up: Funny interviews? Like I said Scott didn't have many stand-out stats but he did bring some comedic relief to his interviews. From his Princess Phaneuf comments to his cameos during other player interviews, he brought some humor to a disastrous season.

Thumbs Down: The hit to Eriksson. It might not have been completely intentional but hits like this need to leave the game. It was also over-blown by the Milbury rant but at the same time it never should have happened and his seven game suspension was well earned even though for a first time offender it may have been a bit stiff.

Memorable Moment: Like mentioned above, his goal. It was a rough season for Sabres fans but his goal stands out as one of the high points.

Voting: Voting: We're grading on a curve this year, adjusting for the Sabres organizational ineptitude. So, using the good old grade school system of A, B, C, D, F, with A representing a great season (for the Sabres) C an average season, and F a very poor season (again, for the worst team in the league) grade John Scott on his performance this year.
