At the time I write this, it is 1:00 EST, seven hours from the 2014 NHL Draft Lottery. I sit and wonder what does the first overall pick really mean this year? I say this year because there are examples in the past or possibly in the future that can prove me wrong. The possible first pick this year comes down to Aaron Ekblad, Sam Reinhart, Sam Bennett, or even Leon Draisaitl. Whoever wins the Lottery will get the first overall draft selection. Florida, finishing one spot before Buffalo, has the highest chance to gain the first overall selection. If Buffalo wins, and picks first, I thinks they will draft Sam. I'm not sure which one but it will be a Sam. The one that I think will go first will be Sam Reinhart. He expresses an exceptional hockey IQ that allows him to take good shots and make smooth passes to teammates. The Sabres, I believe, will take Reinhart, and make the right choice in doing so. If Florida picks first they with Ekblad to fill the role of the guy to count on for offensive production on the blue line. Although their offensive prospects have decent depth, the Panthers can always add a center to compete with Alexander Barkov and Johnathan Huberdeau for the top line spot by adding Reinhart. The Panthers also have the option to add Left Wing depth in a Sam Bennett first overall pick. If the Panthers pick first, which I think they will, I feel they will select Aaron Ekblad. He will be the top guy on defense for them for eyes to come. If this happens and the Panthers select first overall, the options decrease for the Sabres. This can be a good thing, or a bad thing. The good part is there are plenty of other fish in the sea. Although Ekblad may have been selected, Sam Reinhart can become a great future franchise center for the Sabres. Reinhart is a guy who can start in the NHL after being drafted. If the Sabres draft Bennett then they have the option to send back to juniors where he can get the feeling to play in important games and play an important role for his team. The Sabres can also bring into the NHL and get him experience, I am not a fan of this option. I feel like that is what the Oilers tried to do and now their players have no experience with a winning team. The Oilers can also receive the first pick, but I think every one knows they will pick Ekblad, leaving the Sabres in the same situation. The point of writing this was to show that no matter what the Sabres, I believe, will take Sam Reinhart. Even if Florida, Edmonton, or even if They pick. It all comes down to the luck of the draw at the lottery which begins at 8:00 EST on NBC Sports Network and then re-run on the NHL Network at 8:30 EST.
