NHL Trade Deadline: Ryan Miller and Steve Ott Traded To St. Louis

Kevin Hoffman-USA TODAY Sports

The Buffalo Sabres have made their first big move of the deadline as they have sent Ryan Miller to the St. Louis Blues.

UPDATE #1: The full return has been released. It is Ryan Miller and Steve Ott heading to St. Louis for Jaroslav Halak, Chris Stewart, prospect William Carrier, a 2015 first round rounder and another conditional pick.

UPDATE #2: The conditional pick could be as high as a 2014 first rounder, and as low as a 2016 third rounder. If the Blues make the Western Conference Finals OR if Ryan Miller re-signs, then the pick becomes a first rounder, and the Sabres would then own STL's 2014 and 2015 first round picks as a result of this deal. According to team officials, there are "about 30 other conditions" between those two outcomes, so we'll have to wait and see.

The Sabres have also retained a small portion of Miller's salary, equal to the difference between his contract and Halak's, equal to $1.75 million.

Ryan Miller was supposed to be the starting goaltender for the Buffalo Sabres on Friday night against the San Jose Sharks. Then, GM Tim Murray never made it to his weekly radio spot on WGR and now both Ryan Miller and Steve Ott are healthy scratches against the Sharks. This can only lead to speculation about when the Miller and/or Ott trades are going to go down. The latest speculation comes from St. Louis beat writer Jeremy Rutherford:

Shortly after, it was confirmed by RDS' Renuad Lavoie that Miller would be heading to St. Louis with Jaroslav Halak as the start of the return.

With Miller being traded and the Rochester Americans playing in Chicago tonight, there currently is no backup for starter Jhonas Enroth tonight. That could mean that Enroth could be in for a long night if things go badly, or worse, a non goaltender suits up for the Sabres if he gets injured.
