The Sabres held a press conference Thursday morning, announcing Tim Murray's hiring as general manager.

The Buffalo Sabres completed their search for a new general manager by announcing the hiring of former Ottawa Senators assistant GM Tim Murray.

The team also hired former Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Craig Patrick as a special assistant.

Buffalo, led by new president of hockey operations Pat LaFontaine, had been searching for a new GM since it fired Darcy Regier and head coach Ron Rolston earlier this season amid one of the worst starts in franchise history.

Murray, who is the nephew of Ottawa Senators general manager Bryan Murray, has been working in the Senators organization since 2007, and served as the team's assistant general manager, as well as the general manager for Ottawa's AHL affiliate.

Murray will certainly have his work cut out for him. He is taking over a team that is at the bottom of the NHL in wins and goals, has questionable contracts on the books and has to deal with upcoming unrestricted free agents Ryan Miller and Matt Moulson and by his own admission nobody on the team is untouchable in trade talks.

"This team is in last place right now," said Murray. "Everyone can be traded."
