My Buffalo Sabres Plan

January 12, 2014: Tim Murray has a meeting with G Ryan Miller, LW Matt Moulson, and LW Steve Ott to discuss their feelings regarding re-signing; also laying out the "Timeline" so they are aware of the plan going forward.

January 13, 2014: Assuming the meeting goes well, Murray, LaFontaine, and Patrick contact G Ryan Miller’s agent Mike Liut to discuss an extension via conference call. Start the conversation with a formal offer: 5 Years/$35M with 22-Team NTC. Allow Liut to give his pitch, and he comes back with 6 Years/$51M with Full NMC. Declare reasons for lower, shorter deal; come back with 5 Years/$36.25M with Full NTC. Liut will most likely play hard to get, claiming low-ball, threatens with one final offer: 5 Years/$41.25M with Full NMC. Apologize, defend organization, pitch Miller’s key role in the future, and come back with: 5 Years/$38M with Full NMC. Mike Liut apologizes for threat, comes back with: 5 Years/$40M with Full NMC. Put Liut on hold for a minute or two. Come back on, accept deal, and call up Miller to sign paperwork.

January 14, 2014: President of Hockey Operations Pat LaFontaine calls Press Conference for today at 10:30 AM. Announce Miller extension.

January 16, 2014: Assuming the meeting goes well, Murray, LaFontaine, and Patrick contact LW Steve Ott’s agent to discuss an extension via conference call. Start the conversation with a formal offer: 3 Years/$10M. Allow Ott’s agent to give his pitch, and he comes back with 6 Years/$27M with a Full NTC. Explain reasons for lower, shorter deal; come back with 3 Years/$10.5M with an 8-Team NTC. Ott’s agent will argue a little more, saying that’s not enough, he is your captain, etc. He comes back with 5 Years/$21M with a Full NTC. Agree about the Captaincy, and explain reasons for not giving a Full NTC. Come back with 4 Years/$15M with a 10-Team NTC. Ott’s agent will say he is losing patience, threatens with one final offer: 4 Years/$16M with a 20-Team NTC. They tell him they agree with the terms, but not 20 Teams. Come back with 4 Years/$16M with a 15-Team NTC. He accepts deal. Call Ott up to sign paperwork.

January 17, 2014: President of Hockey Operations Pat LaFontaine calls Press Conference for today at 10:30 AM. Announce Ott extension.

February 4, 2014: Assuming the meeting goes well, Murray, LaFontaine, and Patrick contact LW Matt Moulson’s agent Wade Arnott to discuss an extension via conference call. Start the conversation with a formal offer: 7 Years/$31.5M. Allow Arnott to give his pitch, and he comes back with 4 Years/$26M with a Full NTC. Explain reasons for lower, longer deal; come back with 6 Years/$30M with a 12-Team NTC. Arnott will argue, saying that’s not enough for him, he is your top scorer so far, his numbers are comparable to a Vanek, etc. He comes back with 5 Years/$31.25M with a Full NTC. Agree about the scoring capability, and reasons for not giving him a Full NTC. Come back with 6 Years/$33M with a 15-Team NTC. Arnott will raise his voice, say the Sabres are being unreasonable, and threaten to walk away with one final offer: 6 Years/$36M with a Full NTC. Sabres tell him they accept the deal. Call up Moulson to sign paperwork.

February 5, 2014: President of Hockey Operations Pat LaFontaine calls Press Conference today at 10:30 AM. Announce Moulson extension.

March 5, 2014: Tim Murray calls Craig MacTavish (Edmonton) and tells him his lack of experienced Defensemen is hurting his team. He offers Henrik Tallinder in exchange for a 3rd Round Pick in 2014. MacTavish will reply with a 5th Round Pick in 2015. Murray counters at a 4th Round Pick in 2015. MacTavish accepts.

Murray calls Marc Bergevin (Montreal) and continues discussions regarding Danny Briere. Murray tells him Stafford is on the table. Bergevin offers Stafford for Briere straight up. Murray accepts.
