Given the buzz around the possible swapping of Ryan Miller for Paul Stastny, I looked at the 2012-13 regular season faceoff statistics for both Stastny and Cody Hodgson in even strength (ES), power play (PP), and short-handed (SH) situations (data from NHL.com). For the season, Hodgson played in 8 more games and took about 30 more faceoffs than Stastny.
Hodgson ES 46.6% PP 51.5% SH 42.0%
Stastny ES 50.1% PP 61.1% SH 52.8%
These statistics show that, relative to Hodgson, Stastny is much better at gaining possession of the puck on powerplay and shorthanded draws. Despite playing 8 fewer games, Stastny took 87 short-handed faceoffs, compared to Hodgson's 81. Stastny's overall faceoff win percentage (52.4%) ranked him as the 14th best faceoff man of all skaters in the NHL who took 700 or more faceoffs.
