The Colorodo Avalanche are seemingly going to take Nathan Mackinnon 1st overall at the draft. Even though the Avs are suspiciously transparent about their intentions, most people believe that if they don't trade the pick, they will take Mackinnon. This is where the Stastny problem comes in. Mackinnon is NHL ready and deserves a spot on one of the Avs top three lines (putting him on the 4th line would be an underwhelming situation for him, think about the Grigorenko situation here in Buffalo last season).
The Avs suddenly have a log jam at the center position by taking Mackinnon. They could maybe get away with putting O'Reily at wing, but that doesn't seem likely. They can't trade away O'Reily this year because of his offer sheet that they matched, and Duchene is in for the long haul with the club. Stastny immediately becomes the odd man out. I know the Stasty to Buffalo topic has come up before, but by Draft Day the reasons for Stastny finally leaving the Avs via trade are at an all time high. He's 27 years old and could be that #1 center with veteran experience that we need. He carries a pretty sizable cap hit of 6.6mil through the 2014-2015 season, however if the sabres move some players to get him, I believe it could be done. What will it take?
The Avs need defense: maybe Sekera, a second rounder, and a prospect (who?). The Avs had most of the leverage in the past concerning Stastny's trade options, however they may be desperate to trade him after Draft Day to open up a spot for Mackinnon. Let's put a package together to pick up Stastny and get our #1 center in Buffalo, what do you think?
