The Sabres, not so much. There are a few rays of hope. Our top 3 are on par with most of the pointy end of the league and Miller is getting his game on track. So those two somewhat important factors are in place which is nice. Theres a lot of talk of going after O'Reilly using Stafford and Leopold as pieces, which is fine with me but more to the point I'd like to make, Tim Redinger at Sabrenoise is saying some things I totally agree with. Leadership is something completely in absence on the Sabres roster.
Stafford on the out leaves a RW spot Iginla would fit beautifully in to. Even the now vacant A would be entirely appropriate.
I'm not going to bother comparing Staff and Iginla on stats, they're both having uncharacteristic slumps, but I'd be bringing J.I. in to plus the enormous hole in actual leadership. Pommers as captain is fine, he "has the room" but every team needs a guy that will get in your face, kick you in the pants when you deserve it. "what about Ott" you might say. Sure Otter brings energy and positivity but I don't see him holding you directly accountable. calling you out to your face to sort yourself out and get on with it.
The Sabres need a bit more 'stick' and I'd like Iggy to wield it.
His trade value is somewhat diminished, poor recent play is a factor. He's in a contract year, Theres no way Calgary lets him walk to Free Agency so yes, he could turn out to be a rental but you'd have to think Darcy and Pegula would make a compelling case to sign an extension pretty quickly.
The Flames, if they're smart ( they'll fire their GM.. ) will want prospects and picks. who exactly? no idea.
