NHL-CHL transfer rule expires?

Stay connected for news and updates

A Mr. Travis Hughes has made an interesting post over on Broadstreet hockey.

The meat of which seems to be that the agreement between the NHL and CHL could be out the window.

In the article ( which you should go read by the way ) it appears that the CBA talks could well see the rule ousted, clearing the way for 18-20yr old players from the CHL able to step up in to the AHL.

From a Sabres perspective I know that it affects our 2012 top pick, Mikhail Grigorenko.

Are there any other prospects in our system that would benefit from some time in Rochester more than a 9 gamer with the big league side?

What are your thoughts on the possibility.

I can see the benefit in the rule from the CHL perspective, it keeps talent in their teams longer and makes the league a higher quality when you have high quality players playing for you. Which is a reasonable consideration from their end.

But from the NHL level, it's a little silly. If you take a gamble on a kid and it doesn't work out what then. does he sit on the bench for the season and waste a year. If nothing else there needs to be an out that helps everyone. How that would work is up to smarter men than I...
