NHL Draft 2012: Buffalo Sabres Select Zemgus Girgensons With No. 14 Pick

With the No. 14 pick in the 2012 NHL Draft, the Buffalo Sabres have selected Zemgus Girgensons, a center from the Dubuque Fighting Saints of the United States Hockey League.

The Sabres traded the No. 21 and 42 overall selections in the 2012 draft to the Calgary Flames in order acquire the No. 14 pick.

A native of Riga, Latvia, Girgensons has spent the last two seasons in Dubuque. He led the team in scoring with 55 points (24 goals and 31 assists) in 49 games during the 2011-12, after finishing third on the team in scoring with 49 points (21 goals and 28 assists) in 2010-11.

He tied for fourth in the United States Hockey League with six game winning goals this season. Girgensons will play for the University of Vermont in Hockey East next season. He was ranked No. 18 among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting, but went unranked by TSN.
