The 2012 NHL Draft lottery was held tonight, and now that it's all said and done, the Buffalo Sabres hold the 12th overall selection.
The big surprise tonight was that the consensus worst team in the NHL, the Columbus Blue Jackets, did not win the lottery, but the Edmonton Oilers did. Edmonton will be picking first overall for the third straight year, obviously trying to follow the "Pittsburgh plan" that Toronto GM Brian Burke loves so much.
In addition to the 12th overall selection, Buffalo will also have Nashville's first round pick thanks to the Paul Gaustad trade, but we won't know what number pick that will be until Nashville is knocked out of the playoffs (go Detroit!)
We won't have too much draft coverage until the playoffs are over, but for now here's the order as far as we know it, courtesy of SBNation:
- 1. Edmonton Oilers
- 2. Columbus Blue Jackets
- 3. Montreal Canadiens
- 4. New York Islanders
- 5. Toronto Maple Leafs
- 6. Anaheim Ducks
- 7. Minnesota Wild
- 8. Carolina Hurricanes
- 9. Winnipeg Jets
- 10. Tampa Bay Lightning
- 11. Washington Capitals (via Colorado)
- 12. Buffalo Sabres
- 13. Dallas Stars
- 14. Calgary Flames
