Sabre fans meet in NYC this Saturday?
I'll be with about 7 Sabre fans all going to the Garden to see Buffalo beat the Rangers this Saturday. Is there a preferred place near MSG for Sabre fans to meet before the game for something to eat and have a brew or two? I suppose we could go just about anywhere and fall in with a bunch of Ranger fans, but our blue and gold crossed swords might make us not so welcome.

It's not super close to MSG
but Kelly’s is good. They’re the “official Sabres bar of NYC”. There are no d-bags, the selection is pretty good, it has that nice “dive-y” feel to it without being dirty, and it has bubble hockey. As I said it’s not super close but Google maps says it’s a 20min subway ride on the F or a 16 minute taxi ride away from MSG. Also something to keep in mind is that they don’t have a kitchen; however, they do allow you to order in (one plus is that it’s across the street from the famous Katz Deli).
For somewhere closer to MSG, there is Foley’s Pub which has an unofficial Penguins contingent but it doesn’t specifically cater to Pens fans. The food is good, the selection is really good (they are the only bar I’ve ever been to that had Lionshead on tap and in can form), and the atmosphere is welcoming (plus they have a crap-ton of memorabilia on display). It’s two blocks from Penn Station/MSG so it’s convenient. Plus it’s next door to the Empire State Building so you can seamlessly incorporate some sightseeing into your trip.

Thanks!
Appreciate those who responded. Foley’s was perfect. Being close to MSG was important so the more traditional places suggested for Buffalo fans weren’t going to work for us last night. Shaun, the owner, was there. He was very friendly and joked around with us a fair amount. The food was good (Buffalo Wings were OK by non-Buffalo standards). All other menu items were very good. I would highly recommend it for traveling Buffalo fans who want a place close by the Garden.
I was amazed at the number of Sabre fans that were at this game. Everyone was scattered about, but there was a lot of blue and gold. Ranger fans strike me as a good bunch and a class act. We received some of the friendly teasing which is to be expected (heck, it makes the visit a little more fun), but nobody was being an idiot because you are in their house supporting their opposition. Can’t same the same about Philadelphia, perhaps the worst City to visit for a sports fan on an away trip.
As for the game, it was good. Would have been better if we had won. The sad truth is that if Buffalo had played as well as they did last night and against Boston on Friday consistently through the season (especially against teams that aren’t as strong as the Rangers or Boston), we would be in the playoff mix now instead of having our “playoffs” virtually started already.
I always like Third and Long. It’s in the Murray Hill District on the corner of 3rd and 35th. They had great beer specials so I would usually hang out there before jumping on the green to go to Yankee stadium. Sometimes you are just looking for cheap pregame beers and this place took care of us everytime.
It’s not too far from MSG, and is usually pretty good time. I even saw the cash cab there which was kind of cool because my sister who had lived in that area for almost 10 years still hadn’t seen it.
