We could compete in the first round, but I don’t think we can do much beyond that (similar to Philly last year). I mean, they had 3 goalies play in the 1st round series and we could not overcome some key injuries to put them away. We have only drafted in the top 5 once in the last 20 years….wouldn’t you rather sell this year, and acquire an elite prospect than make a run and get stuck drafting in the middle of the first?

Part of me just thinks we are not capable of this…that even trading Goose would leave this team with enough talent to not have a record that is one of the five worst in the league. Of course, we could win the draft lottery, but the chance of us doing that in the 5 spot is really low.

Columbus, Carolina and Edmonton will be the top 3. Minnesota is falling fast and hard. The Capitals are playing some of the worst hockey and could very well blow up the team. I think Tampa is going to blow it up. Dallas and Toronto are doing what Toronto does.

I agree with Columbus and Edmonton. Carolina has improved in the new year going 10-5-5… I could see them possibly passing us at some point. As for your other teams, I agree. The only thing that may help us be bad is the amount of away games (14) we have for the rest of the year.

I am certain we should sell expiring contracts, yet I am not certain that doing so would give us a top 5 pick. I do not see Darcy making any blockbuster deals in season…our team has really had a sale since pre-lockout. Really…there are good arguments for both sides as to whether we are too good to be bad, or if our schedule coming up is tough enough for us to fall down in the bottom of the standings. I wish I had an answer…but I really don’t.

I know this….though selling expiring assets for some value is something we should do since we are having a bad season. I think Goose is a significant contribution defensively to our team and he ranks relatively high on our team in GVT (6th). It is hard to gauge where we will eventually fall; I hope you are wrong and that we can really be bad for a top pick, but I think we are incapable of doing that.

But the overall cap will still increase by revenue. We have 56 mil in cap for next year towards a cap that is estimated to move up to 69 mil.
