Buffalo Sabres v. Tampa Bay Lightning - By the Numbers

The Sabres continue to struggle against teams that are close to them in the standings. It is frustrating to watch this team manhandle the Boston Bruins and drop a 2-1 decision just three days later. The stats are listed below...if you dare.

It is frustrating...

though I hope this is related to them playing their third game in four nights. We can still lose on occasion…just not as much as we had been if we want to make a playoff run.

Numbers Posts...

Does anyone find any real value in these as posts? They just feel so automatic to me, like they could be a little sidebar feature or something.

Also, they seem to be taking the place of a thoughtful recap of the game, which would be much more valuable.

I have always liked them. The Corsi Numbers can argue or justify my personal thoughts on a game, and I like Oleksy’s tracking of the scoring chances on a per game basis (I assume this is DO’s work, and not scoring chances recorded by some other person).

Do you care to elaborate why a “thoughtful recap” is more valuable?

They are my work

I understand that numbers aren’t for everybody but it is great to know there are others like me out there.

Unfortunately I could not keep up with maintaining the blog in the past and that is why I turned over the riegns to Zach a couple of years ago. When I did that I agreed to stay on in a limited basis. I enjoy statistics and therefore I thought this would be a fun way to be involved.

Zach has done a great job building the site and I am sure he will take the suggestion of having a recap after every game.

I especially like the numbers when I can’t watch a game and only get box score type updates from my phone. It gives me a chance to get a better feel of what really took place. It’s also nice when you do get to watch and can validate or refute initial thoughts from the game like Red said.

Keep up the great work DO, it’s much appreciated by many.

A recap can convey much more information than a stat abstract, and do it much more concisely. A good author can always pick choice stats to support arguments in the recap.

But I guess that we could always get our #’s here and recaps elsewhere.

I mean I guess they could be combined with the regular recaps

but these are valuable statistical resources IMO.

Yes

I find lots of value in these – these numbers often give a more complete picture of what happened on the ice than a typical recap (not that they should replace the recap posts by any means). I like to see who was on the ice for what events, who played with who and against what lines, etc. Even if they are just reinforcing what you already thought about a game I find them valuable.
