This is ridiculous and has to stop
Three Stars of the Game Selection, I mean.
I looked at Yahoo! Sports selections for Sabres/Habs game last nite: they have Price as 1st star, Erik Cole 2nd, and Goose 3rd.
I can somewhat understand Price - who had 37 saves - getting a star {though not the first, not in a game he lost.} But Cole - who was off the scoresheet - getting 2nd over Gaustad {who had a 3 point night including the GWG} is a load of BS.
This was reminiscent of Game 1 of last year's Sabres/Flyer playoff series, where James Van Riemsdyk somehow got first star, despite being off the scoresheet {as were all the Flyers, since the Sabres shut them out.}
I know, I know -- you're about to scream, "it was the local media that made the choices" . . . and therein lies the problem . . .
Which is why I propose new rules for the assignment of the Three Stars of the Game, effective immediately:
- the NHL, through a rep assigned to each game, not the local media, will make the OFFICIAL selections for each game, and media outlets that report on the game in BOTH cities, as well as national sports media {Yahoo, NBC, ESPN, TSN, etc.} MUST use the NHL selection. Any outlets that don't, will have their NHL reporting credentials pulled for the next game. Repeat violations will result in creds pulled for longer periods.
- relating to the above, I realize local hockey writers, being "homers", will want to emphasize the contributions of the home team's players, even in a loss . . . that's fine -- just do so in the opinion pieces and/or recap that follows, not the star selection.
- a player from the winning team always gets first star -- NO EXCEPTIONS.
- a team that gets shut out gets no stars -- the only possible exception(s) being
a goalie on the losing side of, say, a 1-0 shutout;
a player who turns in a hat trick in a losing effort
in those cases, it would be reasonable for them to be given a star for their efforts in a losing cause, but neither the goalie should get awarded a higher star than the player who scored on him, nor should the player who turned the hatter get first star if at least one of his goals wasn't the game winner.

In Montreal, they have their fans vote on the 3 Stars.
Youll never see an away player get the 1st Star
"@Katebits: At this rate Sarah Maclachlan is going to start making sad commercials about the Sabres soon."
Do the 3 stars even matter? It’s just a novelty thing the NHL does.

Not in the grand scheme of things, no.
Its nice to see your players as Stars… but youre right.
I wish all places let the fans vote. It would show which fanbases are the most homer of them all.

You realise this happens at every away game right? Oh, that this was my most pressing concern…
Blanket rules are hardly ever a good idea.

Well hell -- if the 3 stars "don't matter",
if they’re “just a novelty thing”,
and they’re “not Katemc’s most pressing concern” {untwisting your own panties likely is},
Why the frack are they even done?

Sabretooth’s gotta have something to do besides banging that stupid drum and his occasional rappelling adventures.
He does!

Why are they done?
Simple answer: Tradition.
I don’t think anyone that matters takes the 3 stars of the game thing seriously. The only 3 stars thing that should even be talked about is the awards the NHL hands out at the end of a week/month.

from wiki.
Three stars were first awarded in the 1936–37 NHL season as a means for Imperial Oil (Hockey Night in Canada’s then new principal sponsor) to advertise its "Three Star" brand of gasoline. In addition, it was seen as a way to promote the game’s best stars of the time. After the sponsorship ended in 1976, the tradition remained on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s flagship hockey show.

Murray Westgate
was the Esso spokesman who made this 3 star service line famous. I can remember the commercials in the late 50’s and 60’s. I think he’s still alive and a bit of a legend from Hockey Night in Canada.

The winning teams usually pick their own favourite/hardest working player anyway, as seen with Buffalo when somewhere is wearing the Golden helmet in interviews.
I just wish the Sabres would pick something funnier, like a sock monkey. Imagine it perched on Paul Gaustad’s shoulder as he gives a post-win interview.
At least the golden helmet is relevant
seeing as they started the season in Europe.

Does it really matter?
The first star should go to the best player not the home player
