Brian Flynn Making A Name For Himself In Rochester

Micheline Veluvolu

The new Amerks winger is making a strong first impression in his rookie season.

When projecting the Amerks scoring leaders before the season started, most casual fans could have predicted that Marcus Foligno, TJ Brennan, and Cody Hodgson would be at the top of the list. But how many people had Brian Flynn in their top three? Put your hands down, you liars.

Flynn is coming on strong for Rochester, and after a hat trick this weekend, he sits third on the Amerks in points with 8g, 7a, and 15 points. His strong play is resonating across the league as well; Flynn is currently sixth among rookies in AHL scoring and is in the top 35 overall in total points.

So just who is this kid, and where did he come from? Flynn completed a four year hockey stint for the University of Maine Black Bears. As a 24-year old, he did not have to go through the drafting process upon graduation, and signed with the Amerks as a free agent. He was a captain of his collegiate squad as a senior, and earned a selection to the the 2011-12 Hockey East First Team All-Stars. He tallied 40+ points twice in college, and also was awarded the Len Ceglarski Award for sportsmanship his senior year.

Flynn has flourishing recently playing on a line with Marcus Foligno despite being a healthy scratch in the Amerks first game. He is another welcome addition to an exciting young group of talent that the Sabres front office has put together over the past few offseasons that includes more well-known names such as Hodgson, Ennis, Grigorenko, and Armia. His production will likely slow as the season progresses thanks to an unsustainable 26% shooting percentage, but it will be very interesting to keep an eye on him as the year goes on.

Brian Flynn was an unknown quantity at the beginning of year, but if he keeps playing like this, every Sabres fan will know his name soon enough.
