I heard it was an exceptionally transgressive “The Aristocrats” joke…the most taboo one told in the past 20 years.

Man…..I think we may have seen the last of Hecht this year. 3 concussion in one year might mean that shutting it down is the prudent thing to do.

Agreed. Shut Hecht down for the season. Six months rest should help him.
.
When the job is finished no one remembers how long it took, just how well it was performed.

He's not 26 anymore
How many concussions has he had total? I’d be worried about more permanent damage if he kept playing at all. I love me some Jochen, don’t get me wrong. I just don’t want something more permanent.

The Miller article was quite good
But it misses the point a little (in terms of how it looks to me anyway). The Sabres need to look toward a guy like Miller to lift them out of a slump and steal them a few points and wins. That hasn’t happened during this slump….until last night. Hopefully he gets on a hot streak. If he does, the Sabres will pull out some games where they play poorly and have a shot to sneak in to the playoffs. If he doesn’t….well, he’d better hope his teamates can get their act together and get out of the slump on their own.

The full D corps was there finally
Traffic was cleared in front of Miller for most of the night (the Sabres seem to have trouble clearing them out toward the end of a period). Miller could see the play develop and react accordingly. Miller also did not have to keep pushing opponents out of the way all night.
Clear them out in front, keep them to the outside, don’t let them run Miller and the Sabres may begin to turn this around.
Next things to get righted are ramping up the fore check and back check.
Go Sabres!
Nice to have Regehr and Erhoff back
And Miller played very well. I still found the inability to clear the zone maddening – but, at least they kept traffic in front of Miller to a minimum.
About fucking time!
Should silly string really make you this mad?
It won’t ruin your jersey or shirt, and its just silly fun.

Excellent Miller article by The Hosers.

I agree.
They even did a OZQoc Chart recently that I wanted to do in a few weeks.

I was just looking through their past posts, found this nugget on Grags:
Beyond baffling: Marc-Andre Gragnani leads the team with a goals against per 60 minutes of ice time of 1.71. He also leads the team with a .939 team save percentage while he is on the ice. He also ranks second at 2.99 goals scored per 60 minutes while he’s on the ice. I wish I had an explanation for this.

maybe the explaination is simply that Grags is a pretty good player. Question for you and brgred105 since you seem to be interested in these kinds of stats: how much stock do you put in on ice save percentage as an indicator of a player’s defensive ability?
by Frank Reich Revolution on Jan 25, 2012 1:31 PM EST up reply actions
I think it says something about the player’s ability of controlling the type of shots being taken on the ice. Of course a goalie can always let in a “bad goal”, but they have a much better chance of saving a shot if it is taken with little traffic in front of the net or from a spot that is hard to score in. That stat does show maybe how good Robyn Regehr is defensively, even though he has a largely negative relative Corsi number. Behindthenet.ca tracks all this information (and here is the link for all Sabres on-ice SV %)…not sure if you know about it, but I seem to check it out daily.
This stat could be examined in conjuncture with other stats too, such as Corsi Relative Quality of Competition (Corsi Rel QoC). For example, their On-Ice SV % could be low if they play a very high level of competition.

Well I have yet to read a correlation study
but it looks like it’s a decent indicator of how good someone is at collecting rebounds or controlling the slot – two things which if allowed to be exploited would tend to lead to more goals against..

Of course a goalie also has a large impact on things like rebounds so if there's a chance a goalie like Miller
who for my money up until this year had the best rebound control in the league could skew the numbers.

The hilarious thing is that a lot of the Gragnani haters love Weber, and he apparently was dead last with 3.65 goals scored per 60 minutes. Yet because he “plays tough” and “gives 100 percent” he can do no wrong.
I shudder to think were Finley would rank in those various categories.

Right next to Mike Weber in GA/60 and On-Ice SV%. Though according to PDO, which is:
…the sum of “On-Ice Shooting Percentage” and “On-Ice Save Percentage” while a player was on the ice. It regresses very heavily to the mean in the long-run: a team or player well above 1000 has generally played in good luck and should expect to drop going forward and vice-versa.*
Both players should improve and progress to the mean.

On conversely Grags should get worse.

Sample size could be an issue with Weber though – unless you think Ennis really is that tough to play against (.967 on ice SV%). Last season he (Weber) tied with Goose for best on the team with .936 and had the best GA/60 of any D-man at 1.88.

Ruff could also be using him in different situations. The D has been pretty shook up since last year, but I don’t recall who Weber was paired with for the most part. He might be getting harder assignments this year.
I seem to recall Weber playing with Montador late last year.

Reading that now.
It’s a great way to get inside Ruff’s head and speaks to him still being a competent coach.

I think Robert Vollman came up with the analysis….he is posting every article about it here. I just emailed to ask them if they mind me posting one up as well in the next few weeks since I had been working on one….I was going to make it a bubble chart, where the size of the bubbles are in reference to a player’s relative Corsi number (this was done at Raw Charge last month).
It is a surprisingly simple graph that explains a LOT into how Ruff plays certain players….it just takes me forever to work on articles for this site sometimes.
