Trade Time!!!
I have been biting my tongue for some time now. I am not the kind of guy to say "fire the coach and trade some guys" but enough is enough. This isn't working. Some players are not trying. Some are unhappy. Some are worth something if we do this NOW.
1) Roy. I love Roy, but he isn;t working out in Buffalo anymore. $4M cap hit, UFA at the end of next season.
2) Boyes. Another guy I really like but not worth the $4M cap hit either. UFA at end of this season.
3) Hecht. Been coming around, but he is worth something to other reams. $3.5M hit, UFA end of this season.
4) Miller. Yes, Miller. Our team's identity is in a slump. He has a bad attitude and I don;t think he's ever coming back to form. $6.25 hit, UFA in 2014, many teams would take him.
5) Sekera. Anyone who knows me knows that I think Sekera is grossly overrated. He is not worth the $2.75M. Plus we have about 87 defencemen hanging around so I'm sure we can replace him easily.
6) Even though this doesn't free up cash, and even though I love the guy, maybe it's time for Lindy to go as well. I don;t know what it's like in the locker room, but the boys don't seem motivated anymore. Perhaps they are not responding to him?
All that being said, Miller probably won't be dealt, but I can see Roy, Boyes, and Hecht being shipped out, along with some young guys. Getting the top 3 out of here would free up $11.5M to work with. Maybe we dump a couple lower salaries as well freeing up around $13M total? That opens the door to signing a marquee player, plus a few "good" players, and we bring up some of the young talent to replace those which we lose. Let the debate begin.....

I’m all for 1, 2, & 3, but those salaries and UFA status (stati, statum – stoopid latin based words) could make moving them and getting back any real value in return difficult.
I think you keep Miller for one more year. I see this as a bad year. Everybody has them (well almost everybody), and hopefully he will rebound to prior form. It’s a risk only in that if he does not recover, then any value he has now will be completely lost. I’d be disappointed, but not angry if they made a move with him.
Bye, bye Sekara. ’nuf said.
I don’t see Lindy going anywhere this year. If this type of uninspired play/locker room continues into November next season, then I definitely see ownership pulling the trigger (although there is nothing to base this on but my gut).

Sekera
is not the problem. He has quietly developed into a great 2-way defenseman. He rarely takes penalties, he is by and large our best break-out defender, he kills penalties, he can play on the PP (although Lindy has not utilized him as much as he should IMO), and he shows up almost every night. You need to let go of your first impressions of him from 3 seasons ago when he was young and struggling to find consistency. Last season and this season he has been one of our top 3-4 defensemen without question, and 2.75M/year for Sekera is very reasonable.
Roy is having a terrible slump, but he carried this team last year before his injury, and he also has a very reasonable salary, and this team is extremely shallow at center, so I can’t see a reason to trade him. I’d probably just play Pominville as the top line center (his playmaking and faceoff skills are plenty ample for it) and move a winger (Stafford? Leino? Ennis? Gerbe?) to play with him and Vanek. This frees up Roy to play on the second line with a new winger pairing, maybe sparkng some chemistry. No unrealistic or absurd trade proposals needed for that improvement.
I agree Boyes has not panned out for us, so I would be OK with trading him for picks or prospects. But he would be a rental player, so I wouldn’t expect much in return given his recent lack of production.
Miller needs more time to be evaluated. When will he turn it around? Once he does, I’d entertain trading him or possibly even keeping him. But before that happens, his value is way too low to expect any improvements to the team by trading him.
If the season continues to tank, I’d be OK with renting Hecht for a prospect/pick to a contending team. However, if Hecht wants to stick around in Buffalo and play another season or two, I hope he could be re-signed for a discount. I think he makes a good 3rd line player and leader for this team.
As for Ruff, the jury is still out on him. I think how the season pans out after the team is healthy will help management to determine his current value and compare it to prospective replacements (of which there are none worth noting, at the moment). Replacing him before the offseason would be a huge mistake IMO, and highly unnecessary.

The problem is that nothing is going right
Well maybe the penalty killing is decent but Offense=dreadful, Defense=even worse (I mean we have to lead the league in odd man rushes against, and even guys like Leopold are making huge errors in their own end…see the Detroit game here. Gragnani looks sooo lost out there, Ehroff needs to learn when to pinch, becuase he is the main reason we give up a ton of odd man rushes. Myers is getting back from injury but he needs to play more physical. Sekera…ok he has been average. That leaves Regehr and McNabb who are hurt but really were the most consistent players on D when healthy.) Goalie=ughh. My take on Miller is that he tries to be too perfect. He is so anal retentive about his angles that he is way out of position many times on rebounds and when he does let a goal in he has this look of “how did that go in when I played the angle perfectly” He has lost whatever moxie that he had from previous years and I honestly believe that he internalizes things too much and he defeats himself. Enroth is a great backup but not a starter. He needs to work on his 5 hole as he gets smoked there.
I don’t know if getting rid of Ruff is the right move. I know that getting rid of Darcy is. Bottom line is that it appears that we have no leadership on this team and really haven’t since Chris Drury left. I mean we picked up Rivet and made him Captain the minute he was signed if that tells you anything. I also know that there are some serious effort/heart issues with this team. Ever since Lucic took out Miller and the team did nothing in response the season has been a disaster.
Your logic falls apart where you blame Regier for Drury leaving. Regier matched the offer NYR gave Drury, but Drury wanted to play for his childhood home team. Luckily for us, that didn’t pan out so well for the Rangers or for Drury. Darcy has tried to bring in replacement leadership with lackluster results, but who would you have brought in to do better? Established leaders rarely leave their teams. Miller was a leader through that stretch of time when no one else was. Now it seems that Pomminville and Vanek (and Hecht) are stepping up to show leadership. I don’t thin that is an issue, and certainly not an issue Dacry could have addressed much more than he did.
I agree about Hecht, but I think if he could’ve been moved it would have been over the summer. I could see him going somewhere like Colorado – young team trying to get up to the salary floor who could also use the versatility & vet experience. But at this point it probably won’t happen unless one of those teams suffers a LTIR of one of their main guys. And like lassathrax, I’d be happy enough to see him re-signed at a the right price next year. Agree with him on Sekera too; dude gets a rough ride from fans and for what? Besides Regehr he’s been our steadiest defenseman this season (as well as much of last year) and that’s without a steady partner either. As for our 87 D – yeah, but how many of them are healthy? This is NOT the time to be giving the NHL-ready ones away.

Missing a few.
Had to read the comments twice the second time with my reading glasses on. Help me understand why Stafford and Gausted aren’t on the top of this list. Maybe it is because we could not get as much for them as Roy and Hecht. If that is the case okay. I would trade Stafford first, Boyes second, Gausted third, Sekera fourth, Hecht fifth, And Roy sixth if we could get something good for him. Problem with trading Roy is he is right now our best center. I know what your thinking and I don’t disagree but still he is the best we got right now. Shedding Stafford, Boyes, Gausted, Sekera and Hecht frees up about 16.8 million in cap space. Hold on to Miller and Roy for now and then see what next year brings or maybe the off season.
Gaustad is a free agent after this year, so any trade would be a rental and would, at best, get us a 3rd round draft pick or AHL prospect. Same for Boyes and/or Hecht.
Stafford would be an ideal piece to build a trade around, given his relatively high value after a strong season last year, his size, his perceived potential, and the Sabres’ organizational depth at wing. Perhaps a prospect could be packaged with Stafford to bring back some positive return to the Sabres. I’m sure Darcy has entertained this idea.
But why Sekera? He’d be very tradeable, sure, because he has been steady and effective on a trainwreck team and he has a very reasonable cap hit… but those are also great reasons to keep him! Maybe another offensive defenseman would be more suitable to trade away, I know we have an excess of them but Sekera is one of the only ones that can actually play defense. I want to give Gragnani more time to pan out, but so far he’d be my target for a trade, while his potential and perceived utility are still very high.
Agree on Sekera but...
I don’t disagree that much about Sekera. My point is what you point out. We have way to many offensive type defenseman. Of them Sekera, Gragnani, Leopold and Ehroff, I think Sekera is the most tradable of the group. Gragnani would be tradable only as part of a package which I am okay with and all for doing. Leopold does not have the value that Sekera has and forget anyone taking Ehroff. I am an old fashion hockey guy. I want defenseman who can play defense and knock someone into next week. Regehr can, Myers can if he wants to, McNabb can, Webber can but right now his defense sucks. Brennan can although he has a lot to learn. Those are the type of guys that I want, guys that makes another team a little afraid to come into the offensive zone. Take those 5 along with Ehroff as your offensive guy and we are going in the right direction. Would love to see Suter from Nashville join this group via free agency.
The defense needs to start taking names and kicking their as… That’s when Buffalo will start winning again!

Leopold would be attractive because he has playoff and veteran experience (and only has a $3M cap-hit).
I could see him going for a 2nd rounder.
Save Jenrry Mejia!

2nd rounder for Leopold
If we could get a second rounder for him and I was the GM, he would be off the ice right now and on his way to whoever would give us that pick. Heck I would pick him up and drive him there. Any GM out there want to give us a second rounder for Leopold? Please!

Miller
could probably fetch you something nice from a team like the Islanders, or the Sharks,or Blue Jackets maybe? Heck maybe even the Flyers.

Why would the rebuilding Islanders want Miller?

Skip a phase in rebuilding and go right to fringe playoff team
also……..Garth Snow.

why would the Sharks take him?
when they have Niemi, Greiss and goalie of the future Stalock? Miller’s a solid goalie but I wouldn’t expect the Sharks to be giving up the kind of package the Hawks would probably give. their pretty loaded considering their NHL players and prospects
Good point
Did ya’ll realize Millers save percentage was .897 for te season so far? Holy suckitude. (Not all his fault, but still.)
By comparison Enroth has a save percentage .919

Jeff Carter?
Recent rumors are running all over the web saying that Jeff Carter is available, the blue jackets desperately need RW’s (only 2 on the NHL roster and both of them RFA’s after this season), do you think a deal could be built around Stafford with a combination of picks and prospects and maybe grags and/or leopold?
to say that Carter's streaky
is an understatement. yeah, he can pot 40+ goals a season, but there are stretches where it seems like he’s nowhere near the net. So, he could help cure some of the Sabres scoring woes. However, I don’t think I’d be too interested in him
