Buffalo Sabres v. Detroit Red Wings - By the Numbers
I am embarrassed to say that I forgot to do this post after the 5-0 loss to the Red Wings. I was so aggravated after the game that...I put it off until tomorrow. Tomorrow came and I completely forgot about it. I think I went into Sabres shutdown mode. Anyway, the game tonight against Chicago, reminded me to do the post.
The numbers aren't as bad as you would think in a 5-0 loss. The truth is, the Sabres didn't play a terrible hockey game. They made some terrible mistakes and they paid for it. At the other end, they had some chances and couldn't find the net. Sometimes these things happen.

Scoring chances were 9-8?
Didn’t look that way from where I was sitting… Looked more like 9-2 or 9-3. I guess it’s all subjective, though. Those giveaways…. my eyes were nearly bleeding
Unfortunately you are not alone. Many people see the score and think it was a blowout. Buffalo had their chances, Brian Duff went into it in depth during the second intermission. The Sabres had chances but they couldn’t score. Score was 1-0 when Stafford hit Howard in the mask on what looked like a sure goal.
I found myself laughing hysterically when Lindy Ruff told Mike “I know everything” Harrington that he had seen worse games. I laughed because it was true and he was basically telling Harrington that he knows nothing about hockey.
The problem with this team is simple…it is confidence. When the score was 1-0 and the Sabres were on the power play, I could already tell this was going to be a bad game. Every player on the ice looked scared and unsure of themselves. Talent is not the problem right now, it is confidence.

Agreed on Lindy's comment
But from up close (2nd row) nearly all of these ‘scoring chances’ (save 2 or 3) looked very innocuous and I wouldn’t equate them with the caliber of chances Detroit was creating at the other end. Then again it is hard to follow the far end of the rink too closely from in person, so maybe I’m biased by seeing Howard in the 1st and 3rd and Miller/Enroth in the 2nd.
First Period – Myers (power play chance from 2-4 feet away to the left of Howard)
Drew Stafford – shot at open net and hit Howard in the mask
Thomas Vanek from top of the crease (Roy also had a chance on this play but missed a bouncing puck)
By early in the second period the game was over so I honestly have no recollection of any of the other chances. At the end of one period the chances were 4-3 Detroit but the score was 3-0. That was the difference in the game.
