SCREW SENTIMENTALITY, PULL THE TRIGGER
You don't have to follow statistics to know that the current configuration of the Buffalo Sabres has gone horriblly, horribly off the tracks. Night after night, this current team lacks an answer for each opposing team, and winds up on the grossly short end of the score. Forget all the hoopla about injuries .. every single team in the league gets more than its fair share of injuries, yet somehow reaches down from within themselves and manages to put together a respectable record to remain in the playoff hunt. So here comes the inevitable tarot reading ... this team no longer has a coach that can motivate this team. It is time for management to face facts, and find a new coach to send a message to this team. Lindy Ruff must go.
Ruff dodged the bullet last year when, suddenly infused with a new owner with deep pockets and an invigorating hockey sensibility, the team somehow found the heart they had previously been sorely lacking all season long, went on a surreal run commencing after the All-Star Break, then once again ran out of gas in the playoffs against the Flyers.
Expectations were raised. Suddenly, new hope seemed to come from this new owner, and fans everywhere, even here in Florida, looked forward to a resurgence in our Buffalo Sabres. But it hasn't shaken out that way, and you can't blame injuries; the players themselves would debunk that sorry explanation in a New York Minute.
Screw sentimentality, and pull the trigger. LINDY RUFF MUST BE REPLACED, FIRED, I DON'T CARE WHAT WORD YOU USE FOR IT. He needs to go, because he is clearly milking the sentimentality card for all it's worth, and no longer motivates his team. They have stopped responding to his particular "methods" of motivation.
Terry Pegula, I'm a Sabre Fan who lives in Tampa Bay, FL. I have followed the Sabres ever since their inception into the NHL in 1970, attended countless games, have seen every single configuration of this team, and never has this team sunk so low as it is right now. If you care one bit about this franchise, and I believe you do, then put sentimentality aside, use your considerable weight as owner of this team, and tell management to PULL THE TRIGGER. LINDY RUFF MUST GO.
The future and well-being of this team are riding on it.

Blerg. I don’t know how firing Lindy Ruff is going to make Roy and Staff score some goals.

It does look like
Ruff is unable to motivate his team at this point. And saying you did fire Ruff, could the Sabres play that much worse?
flayed ones stealth mode
"Fleshling! Do not shoot! For I am one of you fleshy things. It is I. Your Uncle Stan. Can't you tell by the long strips of fleshy substances covered in bodily fluids? Trust me! I have fleeeeeeeeesh."
This isn't about sentimentality
This is about logical alternatives. Who do you replace him with? I noticed you didn’t have any suggestions. Maybe it’s not a coincidence.
in the postseason
before this year began…how about Kevin Dineen?
Well known for the players he developed in the AHL to be ROY winners for this organization we let him go to FL and the results followed him there too.
“Maybe its not a coincidence” you might say?
We held onto Granny Lindy and his anal, OCD practice of refusing to allow players to stay on the same line longer than it took me to type this sentence, then wondering why things arent working. Not trusting young players he doesnt know well-i.e. Adam going to the 4th line while never benching malingerers he takes a personal shine to (Roy, Stafford etc.) then sending talent back to the AHL (Kassian) when they should be making mistakes (and impact) up here where they belong….he is simply put a control freak and it isnt healthy. For him or the team.
Larry Robinson…Ken Hitchcock…Bob Hartley…John Tortorella…Peter Laviolette…Pat Burns, god rest his soul…lastly Randy Carlyle…all seven of these men were hired to coach in the NHL AFTER Granny was hired by Darcy,WON Stanley Cups and were since fired as the teams’ fortunes sank in the out-years.
Lindy meanwhile sails on knowing he cannot be fired yet pretending to be concerned about the team. No consequences, no need for concern.
Mike Yeo…Dan Bylsma…Ken Hitchcock in StL…people not named Lindy Ruff know this game and have done well this year in replacement roles. YES – some have NOT, I must concede.
How could it be any worse? Here is how I would play it.
Get a new GM ( put Darcy on the road as Chief Scout in the Yukon ) to prepare for the trade deadline and offseason and draft…some one without a boy-band crush on his players, so he can make adult decisions about the deadwood and the studs…THEN if need be he can wish Lindy the best and go on from there.
Its easier to replace a coach than 4-6 players, no?
PS Name the team that would hire Lindy, to win them a Cup, “in five minutes or less” as his worshipful supporters always claim….I cant think of any.
oooops
Bylsma wasnt this year, but WAS a midseason replacement as coach.
My Bad.
.

I’m sure Washington, the Islanders, Montreal, Columbus, and Carolina would all give him a call.

I think Washington + Ruff would be scary good.

Nah
I don’t think he could handle the goalie situation. He would not get along with Ovechkin or Semin.
Or he wouldn't take any of their shit and would actually be able to get them committed to playing a complete game.
And I don’t think he would hate having Braden Holtby in the pipeline. It’s not like Columbus has any better situation.

Firing Ruff now isn't the answer
He should have been fired before the famous speech ,“He ain’t going anywhere” How right he was, but he forgot to add “and either are the Sabres” Darcy after making the statement that Roy and Connolly were two of the top 20 centers in the NHL, should have been fired ASAP after making that stupid statement. The bestmove for the Sabres would be to make a trade. The number one guy to go should be MILLER. He hasn’t been the same since he was run over. A concussion might have something to do with his play, but I think the biggest issue is his lack of trust in his fellow teammates. Since he has been here Miller has played his heart out for this team and then for him to be hammered the way he was and not one teammate stood up for him, that has ripped him apart more than the concussion. So I say do something good for Miller and let him continue his career elsewhere. He will never be the same goalie in Buffalo as he was, as long as the current players are here.
Darcy needs to go first.

I agree.
Darcy is the problem.

where do you start?
I’m not sure what the problem is with this team right now. GM decisions, coaching, countless players, turnovers, injuries, passion, heart, scoring…I have never seen this team in such disarray when they have so much talent on the roster. I mean where do you point the finger? Who takes the blame? Is it Ruff? Is it Reiger? or the Players just not motivated? I have no idea where to start with this mess. Firing Ruff or Darcy may or may not be the right thing to do. Panicking and trading players at will might work, might not. I literally have no idea whats wrong, might just be everything.
RE: Numerous comments to my original blog
Someone commented to this blog, "Firing Ruff is not going to motivate Roy and Staff (Stafford) to score more goals. Another suggested that we don’t actually KNOW where or who to point the blame. How about this: Get someone in there who can actually motivate the TEAM, not just a few individuals, to go in a more positive and winning direction? Ruff has been their coach forever, and it’s clear he likes the money associated with being a head coach. His head (and quite possibly heart) is obviously not in the game anymore. As for specifics, I would go with Randy Carlyle. He coached the Ducks to a Cup; he has the potential to do it for us.

How is this obvious?
I would go with Randy Carlyle.Wasn’t that the guy who refused to play Bobby Ryan – one of the best young talents in the game? (Hint: It was).

Um, how about...
Assuming he’s not retired from coaching in the majors, how about …Ted Nolan? He was always a good coach and a good motivator, IMO. I believe it was idiotic to fire him in the first place.

Leaving aside Ted Nolan specifically
how do you know he was a good motivator?

Which is a pretty colossal thing to lay aside. There’s a very good reason even the Isles gave up on him (despite him coaching them to the playoffs) – the guy is absolutely unbearable to work with.
Yeah, he was actually refusing to go along with the youth movement there.

He couldn’t get along with Muckler or Regier. Regier was smart to lowball him because he was such a loose cannon. I used to respect Teddy more but the whole endlessly playing the race card in juniors pissed me off. He was right about some of it, but the reason he wasn’t getting hired in the NHL was because he was kind of an asshole, not because of his race.
They’re a small market team in a division dominated by the biggest markets in the league. They’re also still paying for the mistakes of the Mike Milbury era – literally. They also screwed up big time with Rick DiPietro. They play in the worst arena in the league with little prospects for immediate change in sight. That’s a lot of strikes against as far as attracting talent and fans. In a way, they’re kind of like the Bills of the NHL, only they won 4 championships. Their young talent has at least started to produce and, going back to last year, has consistently outworked the Sabres.
