The Buffalo Sabres Still Want To Hear From You

Back in November, the Buffalo Sabres had asked 20 bloggers to come together to discuss what they liked and what they didn't like about the Sabres and the way the organization is run. Fast forward to today and that summit is actually going to happen with those same bloggers coming together. We had asked at that time what you guys liked and what you didn't like and still have those questions in mind, but I would like a refresh on some new topics that you want to hear about from Black.

Whether you have concerns about the TWC/MSG dispute, Sabres game presentation, or how bad the Sabres are playing, let us know in the comments and I will compile a list of questions to bring with me.

The summit starts at 5:30 pm and I'll be posting updates all night on this post and on Twitter.

the tone of this discussion will be much different than the last time.

Regier's free agency decisions

What do you think of the high-priced acquisitions by Regier this off-season that don’t seem to be working out very well so far?

Do you consider this a GM issue (getting the wrong players) or a coaching issue (not using top talent effectively)?

MSG Sucks

I know that the Sabres are locked in with MSG for a bit yet, but I would love to know if Pegula has considered a Sabres network, similar to the old Empire Network. It would be great to get to see Amerks games and Bandits games on TV too!

And the colleges...

UB is, for now, Tied in with Time Warner but between UB, Canisius, and Niagara you’re talking well over a hundred thousand alumni in the area.

But Yes the Sabres, Bandits, Bisons, and any other pro teams that can should make a WNY network.

I would love to know if advanced statistical methods (GVT, Corsi, etc.) are used by the FO to make trade and free agent acquisitions. I seriously doubt that Black may know or if that would ever be shared, but I am really curious about that.

Why do you say that?

Haha I know! I figured they must at least do that.

Seriously though

with the way the Org. values Hecht, I’d imagine they use advanced stats.

The acquisition of Ehrhoff in the off-season would show the same thing. According to some stats (GVT), he has been a top 5 defenseman in the NHL since the lockout.

I am just curious if they may look at something that I have never thought to examine….I really don’t expect them to divulge such information, but I would not mind hearing Black’s answer on it.

Yeah it;s a good question.

They probably do have their own stats but they most likely keep them very close to the chest after the way Corsi was widely accepted.

Sabres should spearhead a new network!

Along with the Bison’s, Bandits, UB, Canisius, and Niagara, Maybe even some of the HS sports in the Area.

Pretty much anyone but the Bills who have the Big Money NFL contract.

by Tim Riordan on Jan 11, 2012 12:45 PM EST reply actions

Yeah we've talked about this ever since MSG locked out TWC customers...

Have its be an all Upstate Sports Network.

Youd be able to show the Sabres games because theyre the only Pro team in Upstate, not in the NFL. Youd be able to show Sabres games and shows, Bills shows, Amerks/Crunch/BSens games, Bandits, Syracuse Chiefs, Whatever the Roch baseball team is, Binghamton Mets, UB, Buff St, Siena, U of A, etc…

There are certainly enough things to fill the channel up, with the Sabres being the #1 thing.

I hate that I love Buffalo.

first,
thank you for doing this.
please do take the opportunity to speak honestly for the rest of us. ask the hard questions, of course respectfully, but please make sure this chance is taken advantage of.

questions:
- Honestly, what would have to happen, and how long will the sabres fans have to put up with the pathetic display, until they decide to change the GM or Coach?

- Is lindy really signed to the 7 year contract that was explained in last night game?

- Do you think these long term contracts that are handed out, give a little too much sense of security?

- With the ahl players contributing so well, and so many good UFA’s available this year, are the sabres finally willing to shed the dead weight and start anew?

- please ask him if he really believes that the sabres fans have too high of a hockey IQ that they don’t need to cheer, they would rather just watch quietly? Ask him if he thinks that is has nothing to do with a horrible product on the ice, no goals, no sustained pressure, no HITS, no saves, not even a fight to get the crowd into it. are we really that far above every other fan base in the nhl? ask him if he think it has nothing to do with the fact that the sabres are supposed to be the hardest working team in hockey, the team that i watched as a kid that NEVER gave up. every one wants to cheer and enjoy the game…that is why the only cheers that you hear are Boos.

go sabres.

Questions:
Since players are paid to play, coaches are paid to coach, General Managers are paid to manage…and we have paid players who can’t play well, paid coaches who have 0 emotion or coaching contribution during the game, and a manager who has managed to time and time again deliver us disappointing hockey…Can Pegula make the hard decision and cut ties where they need to be cut?!

Since there is a philosophy change here in Sabreland, do we purge the roster and keep the “win now” mentality, or keep relying on building our ahl team to grow and produce us eventual championship caliber players…which if history has taught us anything, doesn’t happen?

Since fans are clearly disappointed and rightfully so, our sports teams suck and we can’t even watch them hardly, what can you do to win us back because sentiments and support is quickly dwindling?!

Take it to the summit

I have no solutions for winning..wish them luck there..but on the fan side please ask:
Uniforms..are thet staying put.or could Mr P return to the blue ans gold of the 80’s. A better shade of blue…and lose the pit stains on the road whites…and reverse the bottom stripes like the originals…

Game day..please see how the architect of Madison square garden blew up the bowl seating to make it more fan noise friendly..any shot to revamp and make NFC better..

Thanks

What about a paid streaming service for games?

I imagine it would have to be through MSG, but it’s one way to allow their fans to watch the games without eliminating choice for a pay-TV provider.

If the season ends this way, the Sabres need to do WHATEVER it takes to get their games to their fans on TV. As disappointed as I am by play, I will be more disappointed if the Sabres don’t figure something out in the offseason. They don’t want to bad mouth their TV partners, but both MSG and the pay-TV providers are holding Sabres fans hostage.

Thank you thank you thank you thank you sireric for bringing the furious punching cat back into my life. - poz

Exactly

And sadly, personnel related matters are the only concerns I really have.

by Philaster on Jan 11, 2012 4:02 PM EST up reply actions

sorry

that the signing of Leino and Boyes were token gestures to show the fans that Mr. Pegula was willing to spend?
2) Does the team intend to make any type of moves this season to bring in a legit number 1 scorer and/or number 1 center? 2a) Can we add some size or do we believe we’ll win w/ the current midget brigade?
3) Can we please go back to the old royal blue instead of the depressing navy blue? 3a) Can we get rid of all the gray line work surrounding the yellow stripes and chest logo as well as the armpit stain on the jersey?
4) Can we give the Captain’s C to Jordan Leopold instead of leaving it with the gentleman who continues to help Martin Brodeur make SportsCenters top plays?

Do you believe in miracles? YES!
