Daily Links for Wednesday, September 7
Lots to talk about today, especially after the break where we have a number of articles looking into the rash of deaths among NHL enforcers, the new Winnipeg jerseys, and (hopefully) some concrete Sidney Crosby injury news.
Buffalo Sabres: An Offseason of Promise Ended with Subtle Disappointment - Bleacher Report
The Sabres failed to make good on one thing many people will come to realize soon: sign a No. 1 center. This article brings up a decent point in a terrible way, but here it is.

Stopping concussions are much easier than stopping depression - Buffalo Wins
"From the moment the enforcer goes into that locker room to put on his hockey garments, he transforms into a gladiator. Frankly, I think you have to be pretty out there if you are going to be an enforcer."

I think they are OK… I’d like them better if they switched the shoulder logo with the main logo and made the numbers on the back smaller and non-italicized. But I guess I’m just picky. I’m glad the Sabres have finally produced jerseys most people can agree are bad-ass. The only non-original logos that i liked were the red sword and the shoulder logo B with the sword through it… actually how awesome would it be to see a new 3rd jersey with that B-sword as the main logo? I’d buy one for sure.
No #1 Center?
Then it must have been an awful off season!
Seriously…if we look at points, Derek Roy is a #1 center since he ranks in the top thirty in the NHL for centers in that category. The writer of that Bleacher Report article doesn’t think Derek Roy is an elite center because (statement found in comment section):
He doesn’t do what a top center does. He’s not physical, won’t get as involved down low.
Who does that….Joe Thornton and Ryan Getzlaf? There are arguably 10 of these elite centers in the league…why would teams give them up? We can only trade and sign players that are available! While I would love to steal Datsyuk away from Detroit, I imagine the NHL would frown upon it.
Also, why write an article that does not OFFER ANY SOLUTIONS TO THE PROBLEM! If we need a #1 center, who should we trade? Who could be available at the trade deadline? You see any free agents next year that could solve this problem? It is really easy to point out a problem, but if you do not help in providing a solution, your observations are worthless.

Among the NHL alumni on Lokomotiv’s roster as of Aug. 31: Josef Vasicek, Pavol Demitra(notes), Karel Rachunek, Ruslan Salei(notes), Karlis Skrastins(notes) and Red Wings goalie prospect Stefan Liv.
Former Detroit Red Wings and Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Brad McCrimmon was listed as their head coach.
Another sad summer day for hockey fans….
