Good news

The player I would like least at #9 would be my sister’s cat, Captain Creamsicle. She does have a great work ethic and agility, but I’m really concerned that at 9 lbs., she’s too small to play safety in the NFL. She also bites way too often on play action and is easily distracted by someone waving string in the crowd. Lastly, her wonderlic score was pretty awful, answering "meow meow meow" for most of the questions- Dr. Brackish Okun

Uh

You might want to sit down. Mike Card hasn’t been with the Sabres organization for more than two years.

Awesome.

As far as our upcoming Dmen are concerned Weber is the one guy I don’t want to lose.

And Gragnani

Sorry I’m a huge fan of Grags and think the sky is the limit for him.

Weber is the man. Met him at the apple store in the Galleria Mall. We bought the same computer. Real nice guy

I like Weber a lot

But as far as I’m concerned, he’s our most expendable d-man (with the exception of Morrisonn, but I wrote him off so long ago I don’t even consider him a Sabre). If we must trade away someone for a great center, fine. But I’m excited to see the current seven as our D corps next year.

by Katemc on Jul 4, 2011 3:43 PM EDT reply actions

W

Why do you believe he’s our most expendable? just curious.

by JSCoope on Jul 4, 2011 5:14 PM EDT up reply actions

i agree.

Compared to sekera and grags, he’s an inferior skater, very slow, and no better with the puck. His potential is nowhere near that of grags or sekera. Sure he’s physical but where was he when someone needed to stand up for miller in the playoffs?

Yea I remember Weber pretty much midget-tossing Flyers all over the place during that series.

MAG

I like Sekera, but I think he has more value for a trade

Why can't we keep 7 D-men?

Injuries happen and so does inconsistent play.

Save Jenrry Mejia!
Keep Reyes, Trade Wilpon.

We will still have Morrisonn in Portland.

And I dont think that Sekera will sign knowing that he could be the 7th or 8th dman.

by bflo on Jul 5, 2011 12:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Why?

It would seem to me far more likely that Weber is the odd man out – or perhaps Grags. MAG had a great late run – and I do love him – but there’s no reason he’s a lock for a spot.

by Katemc on Jul 5, 2011 12:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Well just looking at the team, right now.

We just inked Weber to a 3 year deal, I dont think they would do that to send him to Portland or the pressbox. So the way Im looking at it is 1 spot for Sekera or MAG. Now in a perfect world I would love to hang on to both… but it seems to me that we are going to be trading for a #1 Center. My original question was “Who would you rather have?”

I want MAG on this team over Sekera, using Sekera as part of the deal for the #1 Center.

A #1 Center is a helluva lot more imprtant that a 7th defenseman that we need for depth because of injury.

Thats all.

It seems as though Sekera, Weber and Grags will be rotated. And I think initially Grags will be the odd man out. Also I’d argue that Weber “fits” the best among the current group of defenseman.

by JSCoope on Jul 5, 2011 12:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Rotating them would be really nice.

But Im just thinking that Id rather pick 2 (Weber/Grags) and use the “odd man out” (Sekera) in a package for our top line Center.

by bflo on Jul 5, 2011 1:08 PM EDT up reply actions

IF we could get a good return for Sekera, great

But carrying 7 viable defensemen can hardly be overvalued. Injuries happen, so do family emergencies and the flu (and so do suspensions, increasingly). I see no future for Morrisonn in this organization, so then what? McNabb? I’ve no idea if he’s ready, though we’ll have a better idea at training camp. And I’m not sure that I agree Weber fits in the best out of the three. We’ve got an extremely mobile D corps (Regehr & Webs excepted) on a team built for speed. I understand that Weber’s toughness complements the others who are… less so, but I also think it’s best to play to our strengths. The ideal scenario for me would be to use one of our plethora of wingers in a trade and retain & rotate 7 D in the usual Lindy way – who’s playing the best?

by Katemc on Jul 5, 2011 1:29 PM EDT up reply actions

And speaking of McNabb

Presuming that of our best D prospects he’s the closest to NHL action, he makes Weber the most expendable. He’s got Weber size & toughness, but with all-round better skill. (Just get this kid a skating coach, Lindy!)

by Katemc on Jul 5, 2011 1:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Well if you play the traditional role of pairing an Offensive D with a stay at home D, then Weber fits bets. That’s what im talking about.
Myers-Regehr
Leopold-Erhoff (Leopold is responsible enough to be classified as a 2-way)
Sekera-Weber
Grags.

IMO Grags and Sekera are somewhat redundant as a 3rd pairing. And I agree that Sekera has better value in a trade and if packaging him will bring back a player with greater use then the Sabres should do it and hope that Pysk can fill in if necassary. It just seems that people are undervaluing Weber. He is not a bad skater, maybe not as fluid as Reggie but I don’t think his skating is a liability.

by JSCoope on Jul 5, 2011 1:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes I agree with you completely.

I dont think having Sekera and MAG in the lineup at the same time, with Weber sitting is very productive. Regehr and Weber are going to be the “tough, stay at home” Dmen, and I think Weber should be able to learn a lot from him.

I really like those pairings you have there, except I would switch MAG with Sekera. But the people who dont think Myers-Regehr will be together are nuts. I think they are a match made in Hockey Heaven.

by bflo on Jul 5, 2011 1:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Again,

I understand the importance of a 7th defensman. But it certainly isnt important as a top line Center, which isnt going to come cheap. Chances are its going to take 2 NHL ready players and a prospect. Well if its between Sekera and MAG for one of those “NHL ready players” I would rather send Sekera… First I think he has more value in a trade, and second I would rather role with MAG.

A 7th defensman is a lot easier to find than a #1 Center. Thats just my whole point.

Well... exactly
A 7th defensman is a lot easier to find than a #1 Center. Thats just my whole point.

Regardless of what we’re willing to give up, if a #1C isn’t available then he isn’t available. Of course I’d rather have the center, but I’ve given up on that till the season is underway at least. I’m hoping for another 2/3, but I’d rather lose a pick or a winger. As for the D-pairings, I know that’s traditional but it’s changing. On a speedy team replete with defensively conscientious forwards & a top goalie, it’s certainly less of a necessity. Mobile, two-way D with speed, plus size & some nastiness with Myers & Regehr (& Weber) fits this team better than a flat offensive/defensive D-pairing model.

I guess I just see Miller playing better

with a few “stay at home, tough guys (Regehr & Weber)” in the lineup to clear the crease and send a message on the back end.

by bflo on Jul 5, 2011 2:30 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree Kate

Grags had a good run for about a month or so. Butler had a longer run of great play two(three? the years are running together) years ago when he first cracked the lineup. Sekera also similarly had a great run only to relapse. In fact, Sekera is a human sinusoid, he is so up and down he was arguably our best player at points last year and played himself into the press box at others. Grags may have played a few games over the years for the big club, but he is still really a rookie, and he is far from the guarantee that everyone seems to talk about him as being. This team will absolutely need 7 defensemen next year, and that is without the injury factor. With Weber, Sekera and Gragnani in the fold, we will need some cushion for the young player ups and downs that will come into effect.
