a thought on Erhoff
just a quick thought on another area of the potential signing of Erhoff...how Jochen can assist
We all know that $$$ and length of contract are going to be the biggest reasons why he signs with us..or anyone else for that matter. But one area tht can help us in the existence of Jochen Hecht on our roster.
Erhoff is German, and Germany is not considered a hockey power. Nhl rosters are not overflowing with German born players like other European countries like Sweden and Finland. Jochen Hecht is one of the longest tenured German -born NHLers. He is a long time member of the German national team, playing in several Olympics and IIHF WC's (with Erhoff) over the course of his career. He has worn the "C" for his country several times during those tournaments.
Having a guy like Jochen in the dressing room, may play a part in Erhoff's decision to play here...just a thought...

Agreed...
He also spoke with Grier who I am sure had A TON of positive things to say about Buffalo. I mean, Grier is a guy who went out to San Jose and then basically begged to come back to Buffalo. On top of that, Grier also said that the only way he will play another season is if Buffalo signs him. Otherwise he will retire. Now that’s a guy who loves this town! Erhoff has also spoken with some other players whom I would expect good marks from as well. In addition to the talks, he is being courted by a team with a commitment and desire to win a cup. Period. With the new attitude on this team, and the new gratitude by our owner, there should be no reason for Erhoff to say no.
It's not just Hecht
but Vanek helps too. Might not be German but at least he speaks German. As of 09-10 (most recent data I could find), there were 16 players in the league from Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Belgium (the Euro countries I know of with German as one of the primary languages), he’s now on a team with 2 of those 15 other guys.
And I’m sure the fact that Buffalo opens the season in Berlin where he has the chance to play in his home country in front of his entire extended family didn’t hurt the negotiations either.
