So we all remember the Vanek situation from a while back. Vanek was an RFA and the Edmonton Oilers offered Vanek a 7 year 50 million dollar offer sheet. There was much debate and angst amongst Sabres fans as to whether or not to match said offer sheet, or to take the draft picks. Well long story short we matched the offer, kept vanek and everything worked out fine.
Lets take the plunge.
Enter the 2011 offseason. The new jersey Devils are currently very close to the NHL cap number. And one of their LW's a certain Zach Parrise is a RFA. Now my question is should we extend a Vanek like offer sheet to Parrise? The way I see it is yes. If we offer a contract like Vanek's to Parrise I dont see how we can lose. Either the Devils don't match the offer, in which case we get a very talented Winger. Or they do match the offer in which case, they eat up a nice portion of their remaining cap space, and maybe have to lose a talented player. Either way the Devils are weakened, and thats always nice.
Anyone see any other RFA's who'd be a nice addition this offseason? Preferably ones who are in a team thats near the cap limit?
