Stanley Cup Playoff Preview-Washington Capitals vs. New York Rangers

We interrupt this Sabres/Flyers coverage to breakdown the rest of the Eastern Conference Playoffs.  Today's installment looks at the matchup that is 1) Capitals vs. 8) Rangers.  Make sure you vote after the jump on who you think will win this series.

Series

The Rangers beat the Capitals three times out of four and outscored the Southeastern Division Champs 16-6, including 6-0 and 7-0 shutouts.  The teams last met on February 25, 2011.

Forwards

It goes without saying that Alex Ovechkin is a world class talent. He led the Caps in goals (32), assists (53), and obviously points (85). But he's not a one-man band. He Nicklas Backstrom and Alexander Semin form a formidable line, if they're paired together. They also have impressive youngster Marcus Johansson (13/14/27) as well as solid vets in Jason Arnott, Marco Sturm, and Mike Knuble.

Last week the Rangers lost their best player and Rochester native, Ryan Callahan, to a broken ankle. They do, however, have very balanced scoring with six forwards with at least 35 points and five with 20 or more goals (though Callahan was one of those players on both lists). Brandon Dubinsky led the team in goals (24), assists (30), and points (54). Former Sabre and Captain Clutch Chris Drury returned to action on Saturday, so perhaps he can help fill the void of Callahan's absence.

Edge: Capitals. The Rangers boast more depth, but the loss of Callahan hurts and Ovechkin is an assassin on ice.

Defense

Washington has a premier defenseman in Mike Green.  Of course he's been out since February 25th with a concussion. He may return, however. Even if he doesn't, John Carlson (7/30/37) is more than capable of picking up the slack. Deadline pickup Dennis Wideman is out with a fairly serious leg bruise.

New York has virtually a no-name defense, minus deadline acquisition Bryan McCabe (who was picked up for former Sabre Tim Kennedy) and the third installment of the Staal brothers (Marc Staal). But Dan Girardi is a do-it-all defenseman who blocked an incredible 236 shots and Mike Sauer was a plus 20 on the season.

Edge: Rangers, unless Green returns. The Caps are banged up at the moment and though the Rangers have no "stars" on the blueline, they have solid contributors top-to-bottom.

Goaltender

The Capitals had three netminders start at least a dozen games. The question is who will they ride this postseason? Michael Neuvirth logged more ice time and backstopped the AHL Hershey Bears to two Calder Cups the last two seasons. Semyon Varlamov posted better numbers of the big two (Braden Holtby played third fiddle when injuries arose).

The Rangers lived and died (mostly lived) with Henrik Lundqvist. He posted an NHL best eleven shutouts. His .923 save percentage was tied for third among goalies with at least 60 starts (he started 67 games). Former Sabre Martin Biron backs up "King" Lundqvist.

Edge: Rangers. No doubt about it, goaltending is New York's strength.

Prediction

The Rangers needed help from the Tampa Bay Lightning to even qualify for the playoffs. That said, the Capitals don't match up well against New York even minus Callahan. If the Rangers can find a way to slow Ovechkin down (like Montreal did last year) and Lundqvist steals two games (something he's quite capable of doing), New York could upset the Capitals. Rangers in six.

Isn’t Marty still out with the collar bone injury? Won’t matter anyways … King Henrik will decide who wins this series. With the lose of Callahan the Rangers wouldn’t stand a chance against any other team other than the Caps and their all of a sudden “paper cut out” goaltenders.

That being said I think one of the three will show up in time for the Caps to take the series in 6 … King Henrik will give a valiant effort but it won’t be enough.

Caps in 6.

But like Jedi said, Henrik could steal this series… but I still think Washington will score too much to the Rangers to hang with.

Actually if the east is really in trouble from the Caps they will score less and hold the Rags to under 2 goals per game.

Whats the story with Pronger?

Heard he had a set back from shooting the other day in practice.

Paul Hamilton thinks its BS....

I haven’t seen news that is recent on it. Any setback news seems to be from 10 or 11 days ago, discussing how Pronger will not play any more regular season games before the Playoffs.

I dont really believe it either...

But this morning on “The Power Play” with Schopp, they had someone from down near Philly on and he said that he was testing the hand in practice, taking slapshots, and it bothered him enough to where they are calling it a “setback.”

Ive got some friends that are down that way, Ill ask them and see if theyve heard anything… or if theyll even tell me the truth. Haha.

coming from someone in Philly

Namely…um…me….

Pronger’s “setback” wasn’t in regard to the playoffs, it was regarding being back for the last two or three regular season games. We’re not certain he’ll be back for game 1, but it’s the NHL playoffs, but I’m about 90% confident for game one and about 99% sure he’ll be there by game 2. Miller came back before being 100%, just like Carter came back last year with two broken feet. After all, they’re hockey players.

Looking forward to the series!

Go Flyers!

Not a bad idea at all...

Funny, I don’t think of Lambert as the guy who hates the Wings, I think of him as the guy who’s an unrepentant dick about the Sabres in the face of even the most strident evidence to the contrary. (Also, the guy who isn’t nearly as witty as he imagines himself to be.)

So him and the PPP guy and another or two or three Leafs die-hards? Talk about making them taste the tears. But I’m not sure if I trust Lambert to go through with the project without being a dick and landing two backhanded smacks for every pom pom. Frankly, I don’t think he’s capable of doing otherwise.

by Katemc on Apr 11, 2011 2:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I think of him as a horrible writer

who often contradicts himself in back to back paragraphs while never having a point to make and someone who doesn’t follow hockey close enough for someone paid to write about it. If it wasn’t for him writing for/being friends with Wysh he’d be Eklund Jr. when it comes to punchlines.

This was indeed a serious comment, i must add.

I flat out don’t get people who hate the Sabres. What’s hateable about them? I guess I understand the Carolina thing, but I think most other fan bases just ignore the Sabres and their fans.

A lot of people hate Kaleta, and before him Ray and Barnaby…
Lots of other teams’ broadcaster’s like to accuse the Sabres of diving and other embellishments
and finally, lots of people are just jealous that we have Miller.

I hate to pick either to win

This is the most repulsive series in the League. It’s also going to be a painfully boring slog of a series, since the Rangers are going to put everything they’ve got into clogging the Caps’ offense, and Lundqvist will take care of the rest. On the other side, the Rangers either score in bunches, or not at all. (But mostly not at all.) Against Washington’s relatively untested goalie menage, the Rangers can probably put up one or two high scoring wins early in the series, but beyond that, I think they’ve shot off most of their rockets trying to stay in playoff position the last several weeks.

In the end, Caps in 7, maybe 6 – worn down, banged up, and somnolent from having to play to the Rangers’ game. Meeting an up-tempo Sabres at that point is going to hit them like a ton of bricks. It’s about time Chris Drury did something nice for his old team ;)

by Katemc on Apr 11, 2011 2:33 PM EDT reply actions

Seriously

Both teams give serious douche chills. The good part is that one will lose. The bad part is that one will win.
At this point if the Sabres make it out of the first round, which is a big if, they will play the Caps, Bolts or Penguins. My preference is 1. Bolts 2. Caps and 3. Penguins. Penguins being a very distant 3. So I guess I hope the Caps lose so the most favorable scenario can play out.
Not to mention the fact that I live in Caps land and it’s nothing but bandwagoners.

You are forgetting about Boston

by lassathrax on Apr 11, 2011 6:53 PM EDT up reply actions

You’re talking about Pens and Caps…either way it’s bandwagon. At least the Caps didn’t let their team go bankrupt within a decade of back to back cups.

Are you guys really impressed with the Pens? They played for a charity point for three consecutive months.

The Pens swept us this year

The Sabres didn’t get blown out, but it was never really that close either.

Good reason…obviously I didn’t spend much time researching the Sabers Pens season series this year.

I'm glad the Sabres don't see them in the first round

But I’m not that impressed either. With Sid & Malkin out, they’ve only got 2 lines, tops, capable of scoring. Besides Letang, their D has no offensive prowess whatsoever. Fleury is overrated, wildly inconsistent, and played his best hockey in the middle of the season. Their powerplay is awful. And finally, no team with legitimate confidence in the abilities of its secondary players has any business gooning it up to the degree the Pens engage in with regularity. They are so, so much dirtier than the Flyers.

by Katemc on Apr 11, 2011 8:57 PM EDT up reply actions

and yet they still beat us without Sid and Malkin

If you count SOs as ties they’re like 6-15-6 in their past 27.

SO Wins don’t count now.

No I'm not

There is no way Buffalo can play Boston in the next round.
Let’s assume Washington and Buffalo both win. Then it’s automatically 1-7. Let’s assume Washington loses. The Rangers move on as the 8 seed. The next highest seed left would be Boston who would play the Rangers, as the lowest seed. The Sabres would play whoever else would be left.
By the way, to our Philadelphia friends, I’m not assuming anything, or looking ahead. Just working out some scenarios.

by Philaster on Apr 11, 2011 7:19 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m on the Buffalo blog. What do I expect? “Oh we have no chance!!” I don’t know about the guy predicting a sweep…that’s a bit…aggressive, but I didn’t expect you guys to be crying woe is me.

Forgot

If 5, 6, 7, and 8 make it, we would play Montreal….Hey, it could happen. and I wouldn’t necessarily mind if it did.

When it comes to the playoffs it's anyone's game

Henrik will need to steal a game or two for the rangers and with Ryan for the rangers there really going to struggle for scoring, but hey this is the playoffs someone can be a hero. I’m also curious to see how defensively sound the caps are going to be . They seem to have bought into the new defensive scheme for there coach so I think the caps can prevail.

Caps in 6

by manic hispanic on Apr 11, 2011 5:00 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

I said Caps in 5. I just don’t think the Rangers have the firepower to keep up and the Caps spent the whole season learning how to play playoff hockey. It will be interesting to see what happens if the Rangers can shut the Caps top line down and Boudreau is again unable to adjust, if that happens for the second year running I would expect him to be gone.

by Frank Reich Revolution on Apr 11, 2011 5:02 PM EDT reply actions

Caps in 5.

Most obvious reason is for the offensive differences.

But for me, its also because I watched the Rangers-Thrashers game. Sure, the Rangers won against the Devils at the end…but that Thrashers game was the worst display I have ever witnessed from a team with a ton on the line. And I follow a million sports. Ive seen weak displays a ton of times, but none worse than that particular game.

I just cant buy the Rangers will want it that bad, meanwhile the Caps have something to prove after their recent misses in the playoffs in recent times.

Worse than the LeBrons in game 6?

I don’t watch the NBA either, though you have a MUCH better reason. I just don’t respect it as a sport because the refs can give you free points, superstars get away with anything, and LA/Boston has been in 50% of finals appearances.
