After playing 30 straight games, Ryan Miller took a day off. Unfortunately, it was only for a practice. The team has been playing very well lately, but at some point, Miller is going to need to take a game off and re-charge the batteries. At some point, whether we like it or not, Lalime is going to have to play a game, and I'd prefer it not be in mop-up duty because Miller reached the point of mental or physical exhaustion.
With 4 games in the next 6 days, I think it is a good time to get Miller some rest. Here's a look at the next 4 games:
Sun Feb 13 v. NYI
Tue Feb 15 @ MON
Wed Feb 16 v. TOR
Fri Feb 18 v. STL
The best game, in my opinion, to rest Miller is Wed against the Leafs. The Sabres have had the Leafs number in recent years, it is the second of back-to-back nights, and is the lesser of all the teams that the Sabres play this week. The Islanders would also be a possibility, but they have had our number this year so far, and seem to explode offensively against us to the tune of 13 goals in 3 games (4.3 GPG, vs their season ave of 2.6 GPG which is also very similar to Miller's GAA of 2.68). Plus it already seems as though Miller is preparing for the Isles tomorrow. Montreal on the road is a must-start for Miller, and Friday night against a Western Conference foe in St. Louis is a game I think Miller should start as well. It should also be noted that these 4 teams are almost identical in their goals-per-game (GPG) output this season. So, Sabres fans, what do you think? Should Miller sit against the Leafs, another opponent this week, or rest when he's dead?
