Put the C on TV

Is there anyone out there who thinks Craig Rivet is a good captain for the Buffalo Sabres? Stupid question I know. Just making sure you are paying attention. A better question is this: Is there ANYONE out there who would object to Thomas Vanek wearing the C like... Immediately? I have never been an NHL player and have never met any of the buffalo Sabres face to face. Doesn't it just seem like he's the real captain of the team though? He seems to me to lead them in every way, the way you want a captain to. I think they should put the C his sweater before the NEXT GAME. Nobody is talking about it in the locker room, but don't you think this team would be excited for him to be named captain? I think they would rally around the guy, and have a little extra jump in their step for at least a game or two. That could make all the difference in the world between making the playoffs or not. Besides, he's earned it. Tell me what you think.

A big chunk of me thinks that this would be awesome for Vanek, to kind of validate him a little and to let him know that he’s our guy.
But sometimes, you see how hard he is on himself and how he looks so upset after missing an oppurtunity, and it just makes me wonder if giving him the C might be too much pressure for him. Maybe just an A. I love Vanek but I feel like giving him the C could go either way, he’s playing incredible right now and the C might help him elevate his game even further, OR it could put too much pressure on him and could make him disappear.

100% Agree. I think Goose, Hecht, Pommer or (long-term) Roy should be captain. Give TV an A, don’t want to pile on the pressure, but need to show him that his leadership hasn’t gone un-noticed.

Hecht? You must be kidding! I can’t see what Gaustad has done to deserve it either to be honest. Roy would be an OK choice, but I think Vanek is a better choice. I think your best suggestion was Pommer. Nobody seems to remember it, but he was the last guy in the rotation to wear the C before Rivet came to town. He had probably the best month of his career. (Aside from when he posterized Alfredson one fateful spring)

I can’t see what Gaustad has done to deserve it

None of know what the players are like in the locker room. However, we do know that Gaustad is one of the first guys to come to a teammates defense and never backs down from a physical challenge.

I agree with your first statement. Vanek should be captain because he is :

1. One of our best players who is coming through in clutch time
2. Always giving 100% on the ice, whether it shows or not
3. Finally coming into his own
4. ATV, and when he is ATV, he is practically unstoppable

The way he has been playing since Roy has been injured CLEARLY shows that he is the best player on this team. Since last years playoffs, he doesn’t just show flashes of being a good player on the ice, but he shows flashes of being a dominant player on the ice. I know his best season was with Druiere, but he is only 5 points off of a point per game pace this season as the main man on the team which shows he is accepting the added responsibility.

On a personal note, I think ATV would relish being Captain….he just seems to have grown into a better player that actually shows what he is worth and wants to lead on the ice. I think the “C” would validate him and maybe allow him to consistently play at a high level, instead of having the slumps he is prone to having.
