With all the talk today on WGR I was wondering what some of you guys had for trade ideas or other ways to drop cap space for potential FA's...
Pominville, Gaustad & Hecht... those are the names, without expiring contracts, that I would like to see not in a Sabres uniform next year... due to the money they are making, that could be used somewhere else.
Now with Pommers, I like him... but I feel his $5+mil a year over the next 3 years can be used towards another player/players. Now first I would go to him if I were Pegula and ask him about restructuring his contract. If we could get him down to the $3ish-mil a year then I would keep him... but if not, hes got to go. That money can go to players that are going to produce. Hes good on the PK, but we need more.
Gaustad might be looked at by other teams come the trade deadline because of his faceoffs. I expect us to make the playoffs this year... but I would still try to trade Gaustad this trade deadline. He can be valuable to a team that needs a gritty center that has some scoring and has a killer FO%.
Hecht... see if we can get a young guy or some picks for him. He has value to a team in the playoffs due to his experience and versatility.
Back to Pominville... This is my trade senario...
A lot of us want to "go out and get a superstar" ... problem is there isnt too many out there for us to just "go get." I try to sell Pominville, Weber (who I think will be good) or Sekera (who I like, but would have to be apart of this) and our 1st round pick in '11 and '12 to Columbus for Rick Nash. Now the salaries just about wipe each others out... so we wont be gaining any cap space. But I feel like adding a player like Rick Nash will help this franchise get to the next level.
