Daily Links for Friday, December 9

Happy Friday folks! Even though we didn't get the promised snowpocalypse here in Buffalo this morning, you can be sure the Sabres will play the Panthers at home tonight. Whether they'll play well, I can't promise.

Panthers seek conference lead as they face Sabres - NHL.com
Both teams have gained more points on the road than at home this season, but the disparity is particularly glaring in Buffalo's case because Friday's game will mark its 17th at the First Niagara Center (where its record is 6-8-2 so far) as opposed to just 11 on the road (8-3-0).

The tragedy of July 2007

Paul Hamilton’s read was especially intriguing. I think he has hit on the fundamental problem and it’s telling that Ruff didn’t want to talk about it to the point that he had to resort to “No Habla Ingles” basically.
The value of Chris Drury particularly was not his play, especially going forward from the day he became a Ranger. I think you’d be hard pressed to find a Rangers fan who thought that deal was worth it. However, Drury and Grier always ALWAYS held younger players accountable and that changed the entire tone of the locker room. The singular focus on winning the cup was evident. It was hoped that that would rub off on the younger players, which is now the oft-mentioned core, and I think to some extent it did.
However, I think players like Vanek, Pominville, Miller, Gaustad and Roy hold themselves accountable. In particular, I think Vanek is hard on himself. What they don’t do is hold each other accountable. It was easy when Drury and Grier were on the team. They were older veterans and always gave their all. The core is now the veterans on the team. It’s harder for Vanek to hold say Pominville accountable because they’re peers, and always have been. I also don’t think they hold the younger players like Gerbe, Ennis, and Myers accountable. It’s more of a you’re okay, I’m okay relationship. I think it’s maybe because when Vanek, Pominville, and Roy came into the league, they never had to do hold people accountable because that was a role taken by others on the team. As a result, the younger players aren’t going to hold their older teammates accountable because that would be out of place.
What’s the answer? I don’t think on this team. I think Myers has it in him, but not right now. The closest other player I think might be Kaleta. He’s one of the few players I see talking to his fellow players and trying to pump them up. But he’s Patrick Kaleta. Not sure he’s the best one. Regier has tried to address this by signing players like Niedermayer, Grier and Rivet. Those were ridiculed, but I think they would have been good if the players were a little more serviceable, and I don’t blame him in particular for any of those signings. Niedermayer had a good year prior to the Sabres signing him. Grier had worked on this team before, and I think he helped massively in righting the ship last year. He and Niedermayer were a few of the Sabres who played best in the playoffs. Rivet was a great signing on paper. He was a physical veteran, but still should have had some good years left, considering how long some players are able to play. It would have been had to judge just how quickly his skills declined. I guess what I’m saying is that Regier needs to bring in a youngish leader. Drury was around 30 when he became a Sabre. That would be perfect. But there really aren’t many players like that around the league and it can be hard to identify them. I was slightly disappointed that the Regier didn’t address that this summer, but again, I’m not sure how many guys were available.
Either way, the cycle of not holding guys accountable needs to change. I don’t think Ruff is the problem. I think finding forwards that haven’t tuned him out / can easily play his system is the solution. I respect Jason Pominville’s leading by example, and I think that he’s a good player, but I think the reason the team likes his leadership is because he doesn’t hold them accountable or get in their face and in order to be most effective, this team needs to play like they’re playing for their jobs and if a guy isn’t putting out, he should feel like the team doesn’t want him there and he would need a trade. So Jason Pominville would be on the trading block, as would Derek Roy, Paul Gaustad, and Drew Stafford. I would see what kind of deal I could make. I think that would instantly change the culture of the locker room for the better. I would bring in a guy to be captain and who could score a lot, and maybe someone else with some leadership qualities. I would fill the other two spots with Kassian and Tropp. That would really help this team, in my opinion.

Is anybody actually excited for the Panthers to be in our division (besides Sabres fans in Florida)? I myself can’t wait for more games and playoff series’ against an unexciting team in a poor hockey market.

by tpsabres on Dec 9, 2011 11:17 AM EST reply actions

I am

But I think the Panthers are legit. Dale Tallon has done a really good job in building a team for not much money. Darcy should take notes.

"Darcy should take notes."

Darcy is of the most efficient GM’s in the league post-lockout.

Judged on what exactly? Not saying I don’t think he’s a decent GM. But Tallon has a Stanley Cup. Darcy does not.

by Philaster on Dec 9, 2011 5:21 PM EST up reply actions

Circular logic is circular

Tallon was able to recruit so many discount players to Florida BECAUSE he won the Cup in Chicago. Otherwise, you can bet that a lot of those free agents would not have gone there. Darcy is more efficient than any other GM who has not won a Cup.

by lassathrax on Dec 9, 2011 6:26 PM EST up reply actions

That fine, but you’re overlooking the fact that he WON THE CUP FIRST, which is much more impressive than anything that he’s done in Florida. Again, I like Darcy as a GM, but he has no cups since 1997. There are plenty of other GMs that get fired that have won cups.

by Philaster on Dec 9, 2011 7:03 PM EST up reply actions

I am not discounting the fact that he won a Cup

or the fact that he is an incredible GM

I was simply pointing out that his transformation of Florida was not something Darcy (or any other GM who has never won a Cup) could have possibly pulled off.

That being said, Darcy has only had one off-season in which he was given financial freedom and he managed to land Ehrhoff and Leino in FA, Regehr in a blockbuster fleecing of Calgary, re-signed Enroth, Myers, Stafford, Sekera, while letting go some discount players we no longer needed like Grier, Niedermayer, and Lalime. For one offseason, he made a pretty large transformation on the team, while remaining committed to the prospects and players that he built through his system. In terms of team development, from drafting to AHL molding to NHL greatness, Darcy’s talents are unparalleled. Let’s give him another year or two to see what he can do to address the team’s needs and get us to Cup contention.

Tallon won a cup? I could of sworn he was fired/demoted before the Blackhawks won their cup in 2010.

who knows what type of rivalries can develop

And I bet there are thousands of snow birds looking forward to it, and I’m sure the team itself won’t mind a couple extra trips to the sunshine state.

I like the idea of them coming to Florida more, my boss on the other hand probably won’t like my more time off requests.. Lol

Not excited for FLA & TB

I view Florida & Tampa as weak rivalry material. Not enough history, too much geographic separation. But if we were going to have four conferences, we could have done worse. We got to keep our current division rivalries, and they understandably didn’t break up the Atlantic rivalries.

We Need Videos Explaining Lack of Suspensions

Leino, 1-game suspension. Yeah, that sounds right.

Lucic, nothing? Crap.

Tootoo, 2-games? C’mon, seriously? That should be way more.

Bourdon, nothing? WTF.

At least with Lucic, you could argue that it was a clean hit. Just on a goaltender. Out of the crease. That wasn’t looking. But Bourdon? That’s clearly boarding, with an injury to boot. I want a Shanahan video explaining why that doesn’t require a suspension.

by kallinan on Dec 9, 2011 12:08 PM EST reply actions

Agreed on all but Tootoo

I think 2 games was fair. Remember, it’s about appropriate punishments, not about sending a loud message to the league.

Although the Bourdon and Lucic non-suspensions send a much louder message than any suspension does.

So with Gerbe concussed and Leino suspended… It means TWO of Gaustad, Kaleta, and McCormick are in today, or we are playing short a player. At least according to the game notes, we haven’t called anyone up.

i understand now

Roster card is lies:
In:
JLeo (Maybe he will save us), McCormick, mystery callup. (apparently playing on the adam/kassian line)
Out:
Finley, Leino, Gerbe

Harrington speculates that it’s Szeczechura getting the call up. Miller is in net. Panthers playing their backup against us (Clemmensen)
I’m excited for Leopold to be back. Leopold was playing well. Despite the twitter fun, not sure Finley is NHL material.

by Philaster on Dec 9, 2011 1:39 PM EST up reply actions

Well, technically their backup, they have the same career numbers so its not really a major dropoff.

I’m amazed they’ve won so many games with two retread journeymen goalies.

Well Theodore’s always been servicable, they have a decent defense, and are top 10 in GF and GA, they seem to do everything pretty well and have the fourth-ranked powerplay if their even-strength play lets them down)

Florida’s PK isn’t very good but they don’t take many penalties which helps them.

Look at Kassian

look at what an awkward kid Kassian seemed to be last year ,even just this last September ; now he has dramatically improved his skating.
I feel Finley needs a good year in Roch. to hopefully do the same.
I agree he is a bit overwhelmed now…hope he saw what he needs to do and goes to work on it rather than retreat into the shadows of the minors.
His tools for the game are of the charts physically, so hopefully Rolston can work with him.

by boonies191 on Dec 9, 2011 6:10 PM EST up reply actions

Maybe, but Finley isn’t exactly a kid like Kassian is. He’s been around a bit, if still green because of all his injuries. He could be NHL caliber. But he could also be a career AHLer. He’s a bit of a project. There’s a reason the Caps gave up on him after drafting him in the 1st round, something teams are loathe to do unless they’re absolutely sure that he’s not going to pan out.

by Philaster on Dec 9, 2011 7:05 PM EST up reply actions

On the other hand, though, Washington’s development record for defensive defensemen is terrible. Perhaps they lack the patience to do it right?
