Flyers vs. Sabres Recap: Sabres Find Every Way To Lose At Home

The Buffalo Sabres looked like they were going to be able to put together an impressive performance in front of a national televised audience. Then, the team fell apart and blew a three goal lead in the second period on their way to a 5-4 overtime loss to the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday night. The last time the Sabres lost a three goal lead was against these Flyers in a 4-3 shootout loss on February 25, 2008.

The Sabres started the first period off with a bang. Ville Leino scored his third goal of the season at the 10:16 mark of the period on a pretty power play tic-tac-toe goal from Zack Kassian and Luke Adam. It was Leino's first goal in the last 13 games, his last coming on November 11th against the Ottawa Senators. The Sabres second goal came eight minutes later when Zack Kassian ripped a shot over the glove hand of Ilya Bryzgalov to give the Sabres a 2-0 lead.

The momentum started to shift late in the first period for the Sabres. They got out to a 3-0 lead at the 19:37 mark of the first period on a Thomas Vanek power play goal. Twenty two seconds later, the Flyers got on the board with a Maxime Talbot shot that beat Miller over the glove with less than a second left on the clock. As soon as the puck dropped, Corey Tropp and Zac Rinaldo, two players who have a history, dropped the gloves in a decision that was easily in Tropp's favor:

That got the crowd truly involved in the game, but the Flyers just manhandled the Sabres in the second and third periods. Matt Read got the scoring started for the Flyers in the second at the 5:17 mark, Scott Hartnell scored at the 14:45 mark, and Jaromir Jagr at the 17:48 mark. Those three unanswered goals gave the Flyers a 4-3 lead coming out of the second period.

From there, the Flyers played shut down defense and managed to allow only five shots on goal to the Sabres in the third period. Even with the lack of shots, Drew Stafford managed to find the back of the net to tie the game at four with 1:35 left in the game. After managing to get a point out of the game, Marc-Andre Gragnani throws a blind pass in the middle of the ice to Claude Giroux and Giroux scored the game winner at the 2:38 mark of overtime. That goal was Giroux's fourth point of the night, he registered assists on each of the last three goals for the Flyers.

More after the jump.

Star-divide

- The Buffalo Sabres had 12 giveaways on the night and head coach Lindy Ruff blamed the team's puck management for the loss. "What killed us was what we did with the puck, our puck management wasn't very good. It cost us probably four goals on the night, including the last play where we just threw it blind across the ice for a breakaway goal."

- Marc-Andre Gragnani is going to become the goat of the game after making that blind pass to end the game. He did finish the game with an assist on the game tying goal and his +1 on the night puts him in the rookie lead in plus/minus with a +10. Gragnani was very quick with his response after the game. "No, I didn't see him. If I would have seen him, I wouldn't have tried that pass."

- The Sabres are back in Brendan Shanahan's spotlight again as well with a boarding call in the second period from Philadelphia's Marc-Andre Bourdon to Nathan Gerbe. It happened at the 3:10 mark of the second period:

Gerbe didn't return to the game after the hit with an upper body injury, which can only be speculated as a concussion. The subsequent fight for Ellis garnered him 17 total penalty minutes, two and ten for instigating and five for fighting while Bourdon only got two for boarding and five for fighting. Head coach Lindy Ruff had these comments after the game.

"Do you think it should be a major?"

"I think so, i definitely think so. There was no turning, there was just a hit from behind and head first into the glass.

The Sabres have another day and a half before they take on the Florida Panthers on Friday night at the First Niagara Center, their second of five straight in front of the home crowd.

Man that second period was brutal to watch.

I'll go with painful.

I have to agree with everyone. It hurt to watch this game.

Can I blow sunshine out my butt for a minute, though? I sense that the team is changing its identity. It will take time. It will hurt. It always does. I just hope that we can find ourselves before mid-season. Regardless, I believe that the new identity will be better, unequivocally.

Gragnani has shown me enough…..there’s enough depth on defense in the system to make a change.

agreed

Grags + Boyes or Stafford +pick + one of the 28 prospects we have on the farm could equal a serious #1 C later this year?
Someone to replace Hecht as our #1 C after FOUR years waiting post Briere and Drury?
Those guys I listed are in the “change of scenery” category who could do well, maybe, in a different system.
Likelier is Darcy given a contract year extension (9 mil for 2 years) to Jochen and calling it the equivalent of a deadline trade a la Connolly back in the day.
Hope I didnt ruin your day with that possibility.

Do you all realize Gragnani is +10? The other Sabres D: Regehr is -6. Ehrhoff is -5. Myers is -4.
I’m not going to defend his boneheaded pass last night. It was a boneheaded pass that lost the Sabres the game. But you don’t fire players based on one play. I think there’s a good chance that Gragnani will become Brian Campbell some day. If you remember 2001 when he was first playing regularly, Campbell used to make dumb passes and turnovers all the time. He got really good though with time. Gragnani has shown flashes of being very solid but he’s still young. Give it time.

by Philaster on Dec 8, 2011 10:07 AM EST up reply actions   1 recs

He’s already arguably our best puck-moving defenseman. He’s still a rookie, he’s going to make mistakes, but Gerbe, Ennis and Erhoff all made bad passes/mistakes that led directly to Flyers goals last night too. Also, Grags is the one that pinched in and made that play along the boards that led to Stafford’s goal that at least got us a point.

I’m not saying to entirely cut bait on him, but when the “new” goal is Stanley Cup, I’m not sure they can wait for him to develop in Buffalo rather than Rochester. As far as the other players, they see more ice time against top lines, so I imagine that has something to do with it. I don’t think Grags has seen as much against #1 lines. Maybe I’m wrong….I’m not exactly a chart ice time kind of guy, so perhaps I’m wrong.
Also: Campbell….I don’t disagree, but I want the Sabres to start seeing some of these young guys as assets rather than as guys to wait for them to develop. They’ve got good young depth in the organization. I’d like to see them start moving some of their chips into the center of the table. Also, I’m nitpicking here. I wouldn’t say a good chance, but he’s got a chance.

You’re not wrong – Grags has seen his defensive responsibility increase lately due to the injury situation, but back when everyone was healthy, Lindy was trying to use him in mostly offensive situations and definitely not in defensive situations against the other team’s top guys. That responsibilty will always go to Regehr and whoever he’s paired with. But it might surprise you that for all his mistakes, Grags actually has the best goals-against average per 60 min. of 5-5 hockey of any regular Dman on the team at 1.67 (his goals for is 3.68, also best among D). You can’t give all the credit for that to favorable matchups. It’s true that they have lots of D prospects (not so much with the fowards) that they could possibly use in deals but I hate the idea of trading someone like Grags. He’s still developing sure but he’s already an important player for the team.

by Frank Reich Revolution on Dec 8, 2011 4:33 PM EST up reply actions

He also has some of the best numbers of any rookie D in the league.

by Philaster on Dec 8, 2011 4:50 PM EST up reply actions

Why does Versus have to always mention the college of the player? It is sort of annoying. That would be like every time CJ Spiller touches the ball for the Bills, that the announcer goes: and the Former RB from Clemson with the carry. It’s annoying.

That’s Pierre’s thing, he CONSTANTLY mentions either the college or the junior hockey team. If Myers had been playing, you would’ve heard Kelowna Rockets no less than 8 times.

You know who else does that to an annoying extent? Jeff Marek from Wyshinski’s new podcast. It doesn’t matter the context, when a player’s name comes up Marek will somehow work his junior or college into the conversation.

Ruff blames everyone but himself.

Fact, is Vanek and Pominville, have gone virtually silent since “the genious” decided Hecht should center that line. Let me help you out Lindy.
Vanek Adam Pominville
Hecht Roy Stafford
Leino Ennis Kassian
Call-up Ellis Tropp

Yes, Ennis at center!!

  • Gaustad to take Ellis’s spot when healthy along with Gerbe.

*The following players traded when healthy: Gragnani, Sekera, Gerbe, Kaleta.

*Youngsters promoted: McNabb, Kassian, Tropp.

This would provide a bigger, more physical line-up with just the right blend of skill. Gragnani and Sekera just too small to play defense although I would not be opposed to seeing if either Sekera or Gragnani can play the left wing. Boyes to replace Tropp for now, however, if Boyes doesn’t start scoring, trade him for cap space.

by Coach Bob on Dec 8, 2011 9:07 AM EST reply actions

Id rather have Gerbe at center with that line than Ennis.

Ennis would get eaten alive in the middle of the ice. At least Gerbe is a tough son of a bitch that can handle his own… plus Id like to see him with players that actually score, unlike Ellis and Tropp.

Vanek – Adam – Pominville
Ennis – Roy – Stafford
Leino – Gerbe – Kassian
Hecht – Gaustad – Tropp

If Gerbe is going to be out a while then put Hecht in at Center on the 3rd line and (Call Up) in on the 4th line.

If Gaustads still out then have an all AHL 4th line of 2 call ups and Tropp. My guess is Foligino is going to see some NHL ice soon.
Kaletas job has been taken by Tropp IMO. Its a good story, local kid, tough guy, aggitator, etc… but the dude cant stay healthy and I believe is in a contract year.

Lindy Beat Me To The Punch

They gave this away. Even if they played two periods of ‘dump and change’, it would have been better than consistently giving away the puck at the Flyer’s blue or neutral zone. MAG’s goofy pass in OT was only the last bad pass of the night. Ennis was giving the puck away like he was allergic to rubber, and both Sekera and Ehrhoff had some beauties as well – bringing back the old ’let’s pass the puck up the middle of our zone from behind the net’ from last year. Funnily, when they interviewed Roy before the game, he said ‘Puck Management’ as a key to the game three times. Guess they forgot about that during the first intermission.

They were saved by a couple off-sides calls too, which the way the play was going, would have went the other way for (more) odd-man rushes.

IMO, they need to come up with a better way of entering the offensive zone when they are down. Philly kept standing up 4 guys on the blue, but Roy and Leino kept trying to stickhandle (and turning it over) into the zone…which feeds their transition game. Yeesh.

The System

I still have significant doubts that the players that the Sabres have can be played by the players they now have. I think it can be modified significantly in order to minimize the defensive liabilities. Even if they can play it okay at times, it can be tweaked so that they have more success. Look at what the Caps did last year.

Not sure which was more disturbing

watching just a complete collapse after a great period 1

or listening to how the commentators describe Lindys “coaching up #26” on the bench. Way to talk to your best player Lindy, same approach you used with Max, the horned one, kids, x wife etc?? Generating lots of respect for yourself & Vanek; bet those young players & euro fa’s are loving the prospect of performing & giving 100% for you. Bbrruce Bbud….

Ruff has always had an “antagonistic” – for lack of a better word – relationship with Vanek. Look at how that turned out. He’s a complete player with borderline elite production. And FWIW, I didn’t see Lindy “chewing Vanek out” so much as discussing whatever with him and communicating.

Yeah that’s what I saw too, the announcers made it sound like Lindy’s chewing Vanek out on the bench and then they pan over and he’s diagramming a play on a piece of paper while they discuss it.

Vaneks goal production should have been elite long ago

Ruff simply does not know how/want to communicate w/non grinding players, its why the scorers don’t develop and at least one usually ends up in the proverbial ‘dog house’.

Vanek has been boarderline elite over the course of his career.

Read this.
What Ruff has done with Vanek is take a raw talent and transform him into a complete player who contributes in all zones.

or the elite scorer /sniper hitting 50 every year.

Lindy

When is he going to stop crying about players being suspended, players who should be suspended, giving out suspensions like the NFL and concentrate on preparing his players for a full three periods of play. Injuries are not the issue Lindy, every team has to deal with them, Man up and admit that you have lost the way and can’t prepare your team to put forth three periods of effort.
